Is heat associated with arthritis? My horse has been diagnosed with arthritis of the Coffin Joint, I have noticed in the last couple if days that one foot is warm compared to the other, would this be the arthritis?, I cant say I have ever noticed heat before or is he brewing some thing else?

hello, my horse has this, and yes, one of the signs was heat (a lot of heat actually) in her foot - could feel it through the hoof wall. It actually travelled up her legs slightly in the early days, and initially they thought it was a ligament problem.

It seems (touch wood) to have settled now, and I don't get the heat as much. Very occasionally there will be the odd day when hoof wall is hot again - doesn't always seem to relate to what work she's been doing - seems a bit random!

Hope your horse is doing ok.

Merlins fetlock can be slightly warmer on a daily basis, but when the arthritis was in full swing, it was a lot warmer.

Increased blood flow and inflamation to blame???

Makes Sense, Thank you. He was diagnosed almost a year ago & I cant say I have ever noticed any heat before? or if there was I don't remember it!

He is sound most of the time, although he has his moments, normally after he's had a jolly round the field. trouble is he's only 13 & feeling very well in him self, especially as he's not got the work load he used to have, turning in a bit of a liability at the moment, bless him!
