I know some of you are probably fed up with me harping on about using NZ Green Lipped Mussels for the relief of arthritis but it really does work for some dogs.

My dog started to become debilitated with arthritis some years ago and I went to the vet's and bought the drug which was supposed to help.....well it didn't help my dog in the slightest.

At about the same time, my husband saw an article on BBC News one morning which was talking about feeding arthritic dogs extract of Green Lipped Mussels. I researched it, discussed it with my vet (who incidentally hadn't heard of this at that time) and then found out that Waltham, the manufacturers of Pedigree Dog Foods had also done some research on this and were in fact planning to put extract of them in one type of their dog foods.

This all seemed like something I wanted to learn more about as I am very very loathe to feed my dogs drugs and chemicals.....no I'm not a bunny hugger, just a sceptical human, with my beloved dog's interests at heart.

So I went down my own route of research and found that the mussels appeared to have many scientific followers, this was good enough for me so from then I fed my dog 1 raw NZ Green Lipped Mussel twice a day to begin with and within a week or so, dropped the dose to 1 per day. You can't feed them cooked otherwise they lose their properties. My dog's turnaround was totally amazing. I wasn't alone in noticing either and this was why a number of my friends also put their dogs onto them.

A number of years on and I only ever have to feed my dog NZGL Mussels once in a while, generally in the winter just to keep her mobility. The rest of the year, she seems totally unaffected now.......although those of you who may remember that she was run over by my truck might think along the same lines as I sometimes think.....perhaps the truck cured her!

Anyway, getting back to my point. My dog was, without question, helped by feeding these. She is now 13 years old and yes occasionally she falls over but that has to be expected with a giant black bouncy-dog lolling all over her most of the time, PLUS she is still an old dog with arthritis, nothing can repair the damage totally......but she does now run with her body straight, when for years she always used to run with her body in a sort of "S" shape.

Here is one link, although there are many if you choose to do some of your own research. It may not work for your dog, but it definitely did for mine and for £5 a 1kg box of frozen NZGL Mussels from Waitrose or Tesco's, is it really worth NOT trying? Start off with 2 a day, 1 x am and 1 x pm.

Right I'll stop blabbing now, here's a link to get you started:

V interesting Tia, will defo keep that in mind for when our dogs get a bit older - will start feeding BEFORE the arthritis sets in!!

Mine's on it too

Sounds good, presumeably their not in any way dangerous to the dogs then?
Anyone any idea which pedigree food they put them in? (if they evr did)

This post could not come at a better time. I have my older doberman crying out in pain with her back hips. She is being treated by the vet and it is not helping at all.

My vet is all for trying everything on the market, I cant stand to see my dog in such discomfort and have asked the vet to consider putting her to sleep. The vet wont hear of it. I had a bit of an argument and am booking for for ex-rays as I am insisting we know exactly what the damage is. I fear it may be bone cancer and the vet wont hear of it.

I will order some mussels tonight and try them immediately. I cant stand hearing my little girl cry out and feel angrey with the vet for taking a slow route, calculated for their own opinion.

Oh dear, your poor doggy. I really hope they work as well with your dog as they have done with mine.

Incidentally to whomever mentioned it - yes I am taking the same tack with my other 2 dogs and feeding them the mussels now to try to slow down or halt the arthritis from affecting them in later life.

I believe they did. I think it is the senior feed that has it in, but you would have to contact Pedigree direct to have them confirm it.

No they are not harmful to anyone LOL!! They're just little mussels.

Yes Tesco sells them but remember to ask for a frozen box and do not buy by them loose by the gram!! Otherwise it will cost you a fortune! They may look at you funny.....but I can assure you they DO have them in boxes...so you need to make sure they realise this too, LOL!!

Theresa, I found a site that was selling extract of NZGL Mussels for cats. Will see if I can find it. Although personally, if I was you I would try to see whether the cats would eat the mussels raw as then you know ALL they are eating is the mussel and not some more chemically powder. I can probably find the link if you are interested.

Synoquin is also great.Available from most vets.I have 5 arthritic dogs in my care and they are on this superb product. One is a 12yr old G.S she now acts like a 1 yr old after being put on this!

Long time ago, my GSD had arthritis and hip problems, he was about 8 at the time. he was in agony. I used green Lipped Muscles and you know, after a short while (prob two weeks) he was absolutely fine.
He had them everyday for the rest of his life, prob about 3 years in all. (Had him pts when he was 11 as he had liver failure)
The tablets smell bad but they are amazing!
If I were brave and could face the smell, I would take them (I just can't stomach the thought of them!)

Synoquin is a drug. The point of mussels is that they are not chemicals and potions....they are merely a foodstuff.

LOL!! They are seafood, they've been eaten for thousands of years. I think your doggie will be quite safe on them.

At the end of the day i tried a lot of natural products on these dogs inc Mussel powder and it just wasn't enough for their severe arthritus, however after being on Synoquin they are livlier than ever and very happy and full of life if thats what it takes for them to have a better quality of life then Synoquin it is.The vet prescribed it cos they really needed it not just for the sake of it.
My horse is on green lipped muscle powder for her hip joint and i must admit it's amazing so i do rate it in its own right.
