On the off-chance anyone else has experience of this: 18 months ago, our (small) dog had arthritic ball joint removed from hip on basis muscles would grow to do job of joint. All went well. Was sound and happy. Now he is bad. Last two weeks, in intermittent great pain, distressed. But not lame. Vet doesn't have a clue. Has (I think) randomly decided it could be his back and suggested x-rays (at a cost of £400-plus). But I really don't think it's that. Any ideas?

is your dog insured???? something is really not right and it does sound like what needs to be done is going to be rather expensive but x rays are going to be the only way of seeing whats going on in the hip joint now. If you are going to struggle to pay for the treatment contact the PDSA who may well be able to cover some or most of the treatment. I deal with the £ side of things in our surgery and i would advise this.

Thanks fruity. He is insured - but past 12-month condition clause for this ailment. I'm willing (if impoverished!) to pay for more treatment - if it helps. But was hoping someone out there may have dog who has gone through similar thing. Are there any dog forums like H&H that may be able to help?

change your vet and get a second opinion..my friends whippet had the whole hip joint removed after being ran over by a car,and hes improving by the day

My dog was attacked a few years ago and kept going lame ..the vet keptputting her on painkillers but she wasnt happy so i changed my vet and he knew that her neck and back was out straight away so its worth having a second opinion'
good luck

Deffo get him to a vet for more checks and once he is through this I would recommend cortaflex for on going maintenance.
