I have an 11 year old cob gelding . His hock is almost fused with juvenile arthritis. Last had Arthmid early Feb and has been sound since.

About a month ago I moved to a new yard , going from limited turn out to living out 24/7. The field is flat but to get there, you need to walk up a hill. It's perfectly walkable so it's nothing dramatic. Our hacking is also somewhat hilly and I've been doing a bit of trotting on the roads.

Now the question: although he's sound, he was stiff for the farrier the other day in that leg and his gluteals trembled when the leg was held up. I've not seen him do this before. So wondering if this could be caused by the hill work (so using muscles he hasn't before or so much ), or living out 24/7 and the ground having been very hard? He remains sound.

Not sure if I should give him some bute , get physio, get vet ? Not sure about vet as he is sound so suspect he'd just prescribe bute anyway.

Has anyone experienced this? Any thoughts?

It could be that his muscles are fatigued from the hills and lifting his leg up caused strain on already tired muscles.

I would get physio out to have a look over him with a plan to contact the vet if they don’t find any tight spots.
