Hi all,

My 17 year old mare has just been diagnosed with mild arthritis in her right hock.

I am keen to put her on a supplement as a preventative and to ease her current issue. There seem to be a wealth of products and i wanted some recommendations.

does anyone have any experience with cortafelx, NAF superflex, any of the Trinity consultants supplements or other supplements?

Its a bit of a mine field

Thanks :)

I'm in a similar spot, my 21 yr old gelding has been diagnosed with osteoarthritis pretty much everywhere but worst off fore knee and near hind hock.

I've got him on 1 bute a day in short term until I have researched supplements, my barefoot trimmer has recommended devils claw and riaflex, which will work out at about £40 a month.

I think if supplements don't work too well I will look to have the two bad joints injected as this will work out at about £200 a year.

Still looking at others and reading up on research projects online so I know more, will be interested to see what others write.

I think Supplease gold sounds to be quite a good one from what others have said

TBH given the age of both the horses posted about I would just give Danilon daily and be done with it!

IME natural suppplements don't really work, if they have any effect at all. My 17yo has Danilon daily and is better for it (he has bilateral hock spavins and ringbone in front).

best supplement is to keep them moving!

my boy was diagnosed with arthritis in November and i too entered the world of the supplements that will magically help. i'm sure some do but my boy is a lot less stiff by just walking for 10 mins a day if he can't be ridden and linseed meal and devils claw in his feed. i've heard a lot of good things about boswellia too but haven't tried that yet:)

I like supplease gold ( not sure how it's spelt) and micronised linseed and 24 hour turnout if piss. If you buy the supplease have a look at the pet medicine company website for a good price

She has very mild arthritis and has been injected and is sound in fact she was only very slightly lame before injection.

I wouldnt want to put her on bute/danilon long term as there is no need and that in its self can cause additional problems.

I am mainly looking for something as a preventative measure now for the rest of her, her other hock doesnt show any sign of any changes and so fingers crossed she wont get any worse!

I will continue to have her injected as and when she needs it so that she is able to keep at the level of work she needs to as long as she is happy.

She is worked 5 days a week minimum and also has a few hours turn out every day the only reason its only that length of time is that she has had enough by then and actively makes it known she wants to be back in.

thanks for the comments everyone i will have a look at the supplease gold :)

My mares on supplease but will be changing to flexijoint because its better value for money even with the buy 2 get one free from supplease. Ive heard boswella is brilliant but my mare hasnt got bad athritis just a clicky hock and it has helped along with linseed.

Pinto is on a home made mix of MSM, glucosamine, boswellia, ginger, tumeric and rosehips.

I prefer to mix it myself, then I can tailor it to how he is feeling.

At 18yo, there is no way I would want to start feeding bute/danilon now, even one a day.

My old boy got diagnosed with mild arthritis about 5 years ago now he's now 26 and still going strong he was injected at the time of diagnosis but hasnt had any since, I tried the cortaflex for a good while and tbh wasnt all that impressed so did a bit of searching around and was recommended to try glucozomine 2000,, comes in a white tub and is about £18 so an awful lot cheaper. and my boy has a scoop a day in his feed found its helped him no end.. also found light work hacking mostly was good for keeping him supple and moving especially over winter when the joints get cold.

there is previous H&H readers advice on here http://equinecare-and-control.weebly.com/a.html

I was told to keep my mare on 1 bute for the rest of her life.

thats until I spoke to Equimins they said.

* IF YOU HAVE LUBRICATION YOU HAVE NO PAIN -

NO PAIN NO NEED FOR BUTE *

they give 100% money back guarantee on Flexijoint if it doesn't work
read the reviews of other readers on link I posted and
to me that says it all
so very carefully

I took her off it , days went into weeks I was very worried but she stayed sound on Flexijoint.

* she did a sponsored ride 10 miles 3 weeks after starteing Flexijoint and she was AMAZING like a 5 year old trying to p off with me flying like a racehorse jumping amazing .

I worried that all the time they are on bute - damage is being done that you are not aware of as joint is missing lubrication.
i would use bute as a VERY last resort
tried cortiflex ha , it was good but £ 50 per mo0nth way to much

i switched to flexijoint much better and more cost effective.

my mare is on her 8th month box rest and her arthritis is playing up

flexi joint and Harpley Equestrian maggie boots are helping allot .

she is 24 has *A* in fetlock and prob loads of places.

We have also just started Acupuncture.
