I think this will have been talked about on here many times but what are your recommendations for arthritis supplements that actually make a difference?
I have a 28 year old fell mare who has fairly bad arthritis in her back legs so want to get her on something before winter hits. She’s not skinny or anything so should be fine in winter but obviously the cold weather makes it worse!
Thank you!!

Mine had arthritic changes in her hocks. She had steroid injections and I put her on an arthritic supplement from equimins. She ended up having the hocks fused and as a bit of an experiment I stopped using the supplement for a month or two before her final vet check (she wasn’t lame, if she was I would have kept her on everything!) and she got a clean bill of health.

My point being, vet treatment is better than supplements.

This is assuming your horse is lame, rather than maybe just stiff in which case I would give supplements/magnetic boots etc a go.

Premier Flex plus from equine answers is great, has devils claw for pain relief which in my experience has worked very well with a noticeable difference

MY vet said bute for life - put her on Flexi Joint and she weaned off bute and vets amazed

if you have lubrication you don't have pain
if you don't have pain you don't need a pain killer
That's what they told me, and boy were they right.

Just want to say that cold weather doesn't always make it worse. 3 years ago I had a TB badly affected by neck arthritis which only became apparent in hot weather. I posted about it and was told by quite a few people that their arthritis caused more pain in hot weather.

Feedmark's Best Flex if you can afford it (it's very expensive but they often do offers) or one of their other joint supplements, I have had good results with various horses with all of them at one time or another (I am not paid by Feedmark).

Equimins Flexijoint is good, as is the Equine Answers one.

I believe this. My ID mare has had great spell since she had arthremid injections in her hocks last autumn, these last few days of heat, I have noticed a bit of stiffness has returned. Based on this thread I am trying her on the Equimins supplement, she won't eat anything but is great with a syringe and I note they do a liquid. I had some NoBute left so she's got that right now, but it's nearly gone and this one sounds better. It may be we need to schedule some further arthremid injections, but will try this first as it's quite subtle at the moment and she's still so much better than she was. Thanks to whoever started this thread, it's been very useful!

Agree with suggestions that she may need bute or other veterinary treatment.

However in terms of supplements this graph (admittedly created by science supplements whose product comes out top) shows their professional product and the Feedmark best flex have much more of the active ingredients than other products (with the caveat that you feed large volumes to get this dose). PS as mentioned up thread, Feedmark do regular offers.

You could try her on a supplement then if no improvement go to the vet

My mare is on low levels of Bute (half sachet) and I’m also feeding progressive earth joint supplement (at the higher dose to get the recommended levels) and I think she is looking better with the combo. She’s also lost some weight (which is a constant battle) and wonder if this is down in part to more free movement. I have just bought Feedmark on a good offer (think it’s currently 40% off) so will be trying that with her when the other rubs out. Mine has had a diagnosis from the vet - very mild changes in hocks and we have a continuous front feet management issue with v flat, thin soles (she’s barefoot to help).

This is the one I mentioned earlier. Maybe it would have done the job if she hadn’t needed more treatment but for me personally for that particular horse it didn’t do much. A shame because I use a lot of their products.

Another vote from me for Premier Flex plus. My horse is now on daily Danilon but this was the only joint supplement that made any difference to my horse with hock spavins.
