I have been feeding my very old boy cod liver oil for arthritus for a fair while but I have to say I don't think it makes a great deal of difference and I've also been scared off it a bit by a few things I've read on here.

So have been thinking about trying him on something different like corn oil, linseed oil, soya oil etc but have no idea which would be best for arthritus or indeed how much to feed him.

He is 31 years old, 15.1hh ID x TB, not a fussy eater, and according to most recent weight tape reading is about 440kg (but I don't find the tape very accurate!) :p

Also worth mentioning he's generally doing great for his age, just a bit stiff so I just want to try what I can to make him more comfy. He's out 24 hours with field shelter at this time of year if he needs it, so gets plenty of moving around. He is also on bute and cortaflex for the arthritus (though cortaflex doesn't seem to be doing much and don't want to up the bute if I can avoid it).

Any advice on what to go for and how much I should give him much appreciated!

Thanks!!!

I have a 31 year old. When I lived in Scotland he wore magnetic boots which helped a great deal. I really recommend them. He still wears them sometimes here but the climate is drier and he is better for it.

Its not oil but i use vetrofen and recovery eq but are very expensive but my horse has djd and very bad collateral ligament damage but premier flex is good you can have it with devils claw or without

Sorry to hear about JB fl - I hope he is comfy at least!

I have been considering magnetic boots so might give those a try - thanks Rollin!

Shirley123 - I have looked into Boswellia on your suggestion and think i will definitely get some - do you know, is it ok to use alongside bute??

hi i would have thought so - i have used it both along side bute and danilon to no ill effects for a condition that was unrelated (muscular) but you could always ask natural horse supplies.
personally i would'nt take my horse of it now he's going the best he's ever gone. its quite ecomonical as well.

Devil's Claw is worth a try too, I have a 31 year old who is stiff and creaky :) She gets ordinary vegetable oil (rapeseed mostly) from the supermarket, mainly for the calories. Last year she had some sort of mishap in the field and was much more stiff and sore, I gave her bute with little effect, tried glucosamine, MSM etc again not much use. I read about Devil's Claw in here and thougth I had nothing to lose. TBH we were getting close to putting her to sleep. It worked like a dream, she is now sound, less stiff than she has been for years and looks fantastic.
