It’s been around at least two years on the ‘open market’ but has been used on selected horses a while longer. Only really used on top end competition horses due to the cost but I know a couple of people who have used it as a last ditch attempt, where cost was no issue on good event horses with good results. I believe the fetlock was the joint where they did the most research on the treatment.

How much is it, I can't see a price? It will drop in future, I guess, but it really looks like the future for joint treatments, doesn't it?

DNA and stem cell treatments are so going to change the face of medicine for all species!

I do have to say I am considering it, if you work out everything its worth try. I just need to see if the operation made a difference or not so the next couple of months will be a waiting game

Not sure if you have Instagram but @life_on_the_buckle has used this on her horse. If you scroll back to around Jul 21 posts she has a couple of posts about using it

I know of quite a few horses who have had it, including my own, either in their hocks or stifles. In mine it didn't really make much difference and he did better with Arthramid. Others have been more pleased though. Mine is a bit older and his arthritis was more advanced and somebody said afterwards that it tends to give better results if used in the earlier stages of arthritis. Our vets are pushing it like mad now but I'd only try it I think if I had insurance and was prepared to write off the cost and try something else if it didn't help.

The cost with our vets is probably more like 2.5k once you add in all the costs to administer it.

Some interesting research on their website, but it's not really independant - lots of conflict of interest / grant supported by the manufacturer

How is it functionally different to Arthramid? Which is about £800 a joint, I think.

They work in completely different ways- Arthramid aims to help the synovial fluid which helps as a 'cushion' between the two bones whereas the stem cell treatment is much, much more complicated, more involved and aims to get normal cells to proliferate in a diseased joint to fix the damage to the surface of the bone.

My vet mentioned it but as I understand it you use it where there is no soft tissue damage or complications. It is also significantly more expensive than other joint meds. It does sound like the future of joint related complications.

I think it's about £200 per vial but some joints may need several vials.

yes this is true. I got away with only using 1ml per joint.
This information is on arthramids FAQ page if anyone is interested

  • Tarso-metatarsal (TMT)/ Distal-intertarsal (DIT)- 1 ml
  • Tarsocrural- 2-3 mls
