Has anyone any experience of AI in dogs?

A lady in Denmark wishes to use my dog in Scotland on her bitch and is trying to decide whether to make the journey to the UK with her bitch, or whether to arrange for semen to be taken from my dog over here and sent to her vet in Denmark who will then perform the AI.

I have spoken to the clinic over here, as I would want to have my dog's semen tested for fertility in any event, but would be good to hear from someone who has already been down this route.

Thanks.

A lot of kennel clubs/breed registries won't register pups from AI although I imagine it's allowed in Denmark if she's considering it?!
I know the ruling body for GSDs in Germany doesn't accept it.
I'd always make the journey TBH or meet somewhere.
I know it's quite popular in Australia for obvious reasons and so maybe someone can shed some light.

Thanks for your reply CC. The pups will be FCI registered.
Having had a long discussion with her this morning, she has decided to make the trip over next summer when her bitch will be on heat and I will put them up for a few days and hopefully it will all go to plan. Exciting! :D

Fit and fertile do seman collection and storage. I think the chap who runs it is called Keith shay maybe worth talking to him. They are based in Preston. The kennel club accept AI when the seman is imported so I presume Denmark will too

Thanks - I have AB Europe not too far from me and have been discussing the details with them, so if the bitch owner does change her mind and decides to go for AI then we both know what needs to be done.

A little update on this. The bitch's owner has decided to definitely bring her bitch over from Denmark in March for a natural mating, which is what we would both prefer. One of my husband's working collie bitches is showing signs of coming into season and so we are going to see a canine reproduction specialist who lives fairly local and will use the collie as a teaser bitch to extract semen from my dog and have it fertility tested, as it seems an awful long way to come without knowing he has the equipment for the job so to speak :D

Exciting times!

Like Amymay, I love your dog, he is everything a GSD should be, IMO. She is lovely too. Exciting times! Will you have a pup, all being well?

Whats so amazing about your dog that she wants to bring hers over for? (don't take this the wrong way...i just genuinely want to know more about it all! yuors looks a lovely stamp without being grossly deformed like some show gsds are getting to be)

Are the dogs in her homeland going down a bad route (as above) or not the same type of temperament she likes? From the photos i assume shes into a big of agility and dog games things and maybe you are too. Was he advertised as stud or did you just get chatting?

I love both their colouring, not so typical GSD - will make gorgeous pups!

Take some cottons swabs and use them to "clean" the bitch when she should be ready for mating. Freeze them in a ziploc - they can be used in the future as enticement if you do need to collect your dog for AI

Thanks Amymay and Clodagh. I have owned GSDs for over 25 years and I believe him to be the dog of a lifetime. As you say, he (imo) is everything a GSD should be - loyal, versatile, athletic, social and strong of nerve. Yes I will be having a pup if all goes to plan.

Don't worry equi, I am not at all offended. To be perfectly frank, I was surprised too.

My dog is not advertised at stud, it was never the purpose I had for him but the lady in Denmark (who is also a vet and dog behaviourist) is on a force free, motivational dog training group that I am also a member of. She saw photos and video of my dog and contacted me to find out more about him. She trains and competes in IPO and unfortunately many clubs, both here and abroad, still use compulsion in their training methods and the dogs live in kennels rather than as part of a family. Her view is that it is hard to gauge the true temperament of a dog when trained in that fashion and she was looking for a dog similar in nature and temperament to her bitch. One that has enough drive and enthusiasm for work, but who is also an excellent house dog and companion - good with children, other dogs and animals etc. My GSD helps out daily on our sheep farm, he is trained in tracking and has also trained in working trials and dabbled in agility. He is brilliant with my children (and perhaps more importantly with their friends and strangers who come to the house), he has a very good off switch when away from work and he is neither nervy or aggressive.

Both our dogs are working line German shepherds but from completely different lines, so the pups will have a nice open pedigree with no related blood. Her plan is to keep a bitch puppy from a successful mating and thereby introduce new lines into the working GSD in Denmark.

Just hope no one ever asks you what is in the bag!!

I am already excited for you, when is she due in season?

Well she is due the beginning of May but that couldn't be a worse time for us, so she is going to bring her season forward - although she can't predict when it will start, so it will be all systems go when she does.

Just a wee update, to say that I took my dog to the canine reproduction vet on Monday, and she was absolutely brilliant. Really professional and clearly expert at what she does, but also down to earth and really friendly. She put us at ease immediately. The bitch owner and I had a chat before I went down and we decided that AI might in fact be the best option, given a natural mating would mean manipulating the bitch's season and trying to arrange travel etc for the right time. So the vet extracted semen from my dog, it was chilled then frozen and then the follow day she thawed two pellets to see how they had reacted to the freeze and then thaw. I don't understand all the terminology and data involved, but basically she said there are 12 insemination doses stored and that the results were excellent for a maiden dog. So I am very pleased.

So, if all goes well, I will report when we hear the pitter patter of tiny paws from these two :D
