Here you can see a close up of all the packing in the hole.

Is this your horse? I read about the 'witch craft attacks'. Thats is disgraceful. Witch craft my ass. B@stard more like. I honestly do not know what posses people to do these kind of things.. Hope the little guy gets better.

No she is not my horse - and no witchcraft involved I'm afraid - pure and simple freak accident.

Oof, looks sore - and WHAT is the stringy stuff inside the wound? Is that what covers the skull? Urgh. Did she need stitches or is it too big? My guess is she fell on something?

Ah the photos are slightly deceiving as the skull has been skilfully cut off in many places so as to have no sharp edges.

Not a kick to the head though.

The hole is packed with tonnes and tonnes of gauze drenched in iodine. I have to change the dressing in a couple of days so will get a shot of the hole itself, if anyone is interested.

Didn't fall on anything; well not in the conventional way anyhow.

I've seen a horse do this (although admittedly not quite so badly) by spooking and catching its head on a wooden bar that had been slotted across the front of the stable door. The bar had a metal catch on it to slot it into place, the horse had been feeding from a bucket near the doorway and it spooked up and back catching the head on the catch as it went.

That's one hell of a hole!

Tree falling? My girl was once out in a field with 4 mates when a mature, and therefore huge tree fell down into the field.
None of the horses were hit, or seemed bothered.

PS Or was it a daemon with a mallet?

Well done Sade! Horse came flying in from field into corral with all other horses in herd. Forgot to stop and smashed into gate post!

The skull was shattered in a number of places; many pieces have had to be cheesewire cut off and also snapped off. Hole is much bigger than can be seen in photos as thankfully some skin survived and is covering the whole of the hole on the right hand side of photos.

That is one hell of a freak injury but i can just imagine something like that happening after watching horses run about like looneys in the field before. That's one lucky horse.

Ooof, how on earth is that going to work out then? I presume skin will grow back over the hole and the horse will just have an interesting dip in his face from now on?

Feck, that is one scary wound.
I had a wee horse that did exactly the same thing as a yearling, though I don't know if he actually fractured his skull. He had a big lump in front of his head, but was ok.

Seriously, I hope your horse is also on antibiotics, this will be one seriously scary infection if it gets a grip.
I take it you have the wound covered? (just exposed for pics)
Are they going to try and put a flap of bone back on?
How wide is the actual hole?
Are the vets not worried about brain damage?
Does the horse seem ok?
Sorry for all the questions, as a nurse I can't help wanting to know all the scary details.

goodness gracious poor pony. I bet she had a terrible headache! Is she on box rest now. I guess you will have to watch that the wound doesn't get bothered by flies.

I hope she gets better soon

That wound is horrific, just out of curiousity, what did the vets say? what is the treatment and prognosis and how will it heal?
