This idea keeps going round and round in my head and I just cannot seem to shake it. Anyone else ventured in this direction?

I have 30 years of horse owning experience and my last horse was a TBxTrek but I was a lot younger then!

If you know what you are doing which it sounds like you do!! and you are willing to take a risk I say go for it! Was at Doncaster sales the other week and lots of lovely unraced potential riding horses were going v cheap so imagine you may pick up a bargain!

Yes a few times and great fun. However I did go first, with no money or any access to it so I could get an idea of how things were run, vetted, viewing etc. So here is what i found. Buy the catalogue as soon as it is ready. Go through and mark everything that sounds suitable ( so for me, it was unraced gelding, over 16 hands). Then take out horses with popular breeding and you should have a short list. On the day get there early to see all you like, you can see them in the box, talk to the lads, see them trotted up. Can also get them checked over by a vet there. be careful of horses which add on VAT (that's a killer), and work out guineas to pounds! worth carefully reading the warranty by the auctioneers too....it's been a while but there is something different relating to lameness if I remember rightly. If getting out cash from the local bank, worth ringing ahead to ensure they won't refuse to let you draw it out. Some people simply put a call out to see of they can share a lift home but I had that sorted ahead.

So, it's quick, fun and eye opener. Mostly there is no facility to ride, although ascot did used to run the odd sale where you could. I bought 2 nice horses there though neither made it onto event.

oh and while it's was years ago on my first visit, I had the most horrific case of food poisoning there and can directly trace my subsequent yearly bouts back to a chicken tikka sandwich bought there. Therefore can never bring myself to eat anything at all there! 5 days of violent illness, daily doctor visits and injections and a dramatic weight loss.
