I'm planning to go to the Ascot sale tomorrow to pick up something to retrain and sell on. I've been to Ireland sport horse sales many times and brought back some lovely youngsters but never been to a bloodstock sale so was wondering if anyone has any advice?

I'm going as well with the same idea! have been to ascot a few times but not for a few years and then to buy point-to-pointers. Generally the ex racehorses dont sell on that easily unless you do something else with them. A lot of the horses at Ascot have something wrong with them so be careful, some are subject to vetrinary re-examination good idea, lots are sold as seen may be ok or not! Saying that Iv'e seen some really nice horses there, GOOD LUCK! Have looked at recent Ascot results and the horses mostly dont seem to be making a lot of money, this sale is usually the most expensive though.

Sounds like it's going to be a bit of a gamble!! I think I'm going to cancel out the 'sold as stands' ones as would want a vetting. Am I right in saying that you only see them walk and trot in hand? In which case how do I know what problems it may have?! I find it really hard to imagine buying something I haven't seen under saddle...I know there are brightwell sales like the leominster and malvern ones - anyone know if they're any good? I was planning to go to cavan on 11th but the euro's so strong as the mo I don't know if I'd be able to get much for my limited budget.

Hi all TB sales, like Ascot. Doncaster or Tattersalls only show horses in hand.
The point is if you are buying a horse to race, you will look at it's previous form guide in races to see what it might be like.
Not to put you off, some ex-racers have issues, not quite the same as starting a youngster.
I love TB's but can be pot luck.

I'd be aiming to buy a horse to retrain to event. To be honest if I could find nice youngsters from private sales for affordable prices then I'd do that but I can't find anything! I also love TBs so the sales seemed quite an obvious thing to do.
