Am considering purchasing a 4 or 5 year old from Brightwells at Ascot in June. I have never bought via an auction before and would welcome any advice, for or against, and any experiences. Thanks in advance
I have bought several horses from the blood stock sales and all have been terrific.
Usual advice... take someone knowledgeable, look at the catalogue in advance, don't get carried away & be prepared to come home with nothing. Buy with your head not your heart.
Oh yes watch out for VAT on top the price in gns. Good luck.
When you get the catalogue do as much resarch as you can into those you're interested in. Have they had time out of training? Are they likely to be there due to injury or because theyre genuinely rubbish racehorses?
Check legs very carefully, dont believe what the lads say but by all means ask about gaps in the race record.
I have only been to Doncaster but they were great. I bought the catalogue weeks before and make a short list of horses we were interested in.
We got there early and looked at the horses we had shortlisted. The one we were interested in was due in the ring so we let the Auctioneers know we were first timers and the lot number. When the horse came in He looked to us first for our bid as he knew we were interested.
Horses with known vices will have the vices declared either in the catalogue of when they enter the ring. Most horses are sold subject to re-examination by a vet, although some may only be re-examined for wind and some are sold as they stand.
Remember to organise your transport in case you do buy a horse, take headcollar and leadrope plus boots or bandages. The seller does have to leave a headcollar on the sold horse but take your own anyway.
Also you bid in guineas (£1.05) not pounds! Some horses will also be subject to VAT. You have to pay cash too unless you have a letter from your bank which will cover a cheque.
Most of all have fun and look out for the big flat caps that all the men wear, as the day goes on the hats get bigger!
