can't afford the fancy prices of 5/7K that is being asked for some horses so decided to go to Ascot sales on Monday, looking through the catalogue I see a few horses I like the sound of.. am leaning towards the ones who haven't raced or have shown nothing, any advice? anyone done the same soprt of thing?

I will be going to the sales on Tuesday, not sure about the Monday yet.
Looking through the catalogue I cant see many horses going for out of racing prices.
The last sales there even the lame ones made £1500.

also sometimes the ones that haven't raced are the ones that have been home injured so may well have more soundness issues than you think
the ones that have raced and just produced duck eggs may actually be sounder - just slow !!

have a look at their feet - no foot no horse is a good starting point - and flat soles and brittle horn can mean a load of time off and farrier bills

then start looking upthe legs for other problems - and once you've established that it may have 4 sound legs, can move straight and is warranted for wind/heart/eyes (the bits you cannot see) only then start looking at the pretty face :-))

also take someone with you to grab your arm when you try and raise it beyond what you've set as your bidding limit ! - auctions of all sorts are known to make people get carried away and bid over odds for things

have fun looking at the horses anyway - even if you come home empty handed

cheapest lots are often the first dozen or so when the bidding hasn't 'warmed up'

I know a lovely horse for sale in that sale!! He is called Endless Night. I broke him in as a yearling/2 year old and he is such a sweetie. Sooo genuine (at least was then). NOt sure what day he sells (is it a one day sale?) Anyway, can't speak from what's hapened since he left us, but grew up on a top TB stud, came to me to break.. Rode him on gallops. Far too quiet for racing. Take a look at him.. He wasn' too big then either. If I remember correctly, I read the cataglogue online a few weeks ago and says he'd make a lovely riding club horse. If you see him, please let me know how he is.

If you want something bigger, Samuel John People is v sexy. Was a colt with us, then we gelded him. Sweetie, but has had knee and pelvic problems. I'm sure has had enough time off though and would compete. SAys would make an eventer in the cat. Good luck!!

Thanks everyone, My friend is coming with me to hold my hand down and I am telling her my limit beforehand , I have to remember buyers premium, VAT and credit card surcharge...
