Hoping to go to Ashwell next week for the Unaff jumping. Want to jump the last two classes, small open and the open but Ive no idea when to turn up?

First class is at 8:45 and then some of the classes have a "50 entry" limit but will they get 50 entries?

Also how busy should I expect to be in those last classes? Anyone go last year that can remember an approx. time those classes started?

Thanks

Yes deffo get 50 entries. The trouble is you have to get there early to enter before classes get full up and then hang about for hours. I know they are running classes under the format that if you go clear you go straight against the cock so they will get through a bit quicker. Have'nt been for a couple of years as fed up of jumping at 7pm.

The last few years that I have been, the bigger classes have been on around 6pm onwards and it was nearly dark!!! I'm sure it used to be a show to aspire to, but now they seem to start it at poles on the floor level, so it attracts all the teeny tinies and novices and is no different to all the low-key local shows now. No offence to novices, but would prefer to have one show at the end of the season that started at a decent height so you had something to aim for. Or is that just me?

Are you close enough to drive there and enter then go home for six hours? (but don't get stung for entry fee, go in horse lorry!) I am going early with teenager, so could maybe enter for you if you like...

The Un SJ is a nightmare!! You have to enter really early before the class gets full, and the classes take ages to get through, I have never stayed to do the open as its really late in the day and i got fed up of waiting and went home.

Does anyone else agree that the warm-up is also tiny ?

I haven't been for a couple of years, but that was the case last time I was there... and the lorry field was packed, so nowhere else to go and work-in.

Yes, I agree, warm up tiny, lorries packed in like sardines, huge entry price for anyone coming to watch, but they do give away big straw bales at the end, which is the only reason I go now! Put one small pony in lorry, do gymkhana races with friend's daughter (where they have about 18 little lead reins fighting it out in heats to get 6 rosettes, then just 4 or 5 older kids winning one rosette per race), wait till end and fill up lorry with free straw. Not a bad bank holiday - am I sad?
