Asking to be notified if a particular horse is put up for sale?

I've been helping at a polo yard a day a week and will be going back in each break between terms at uni. One of the horses is great, a real gent and I love him to bits - exercising him is usually the highlight of my day.

Would it be rude to ask about being told if he ever goes up for sale? Is there anyone that has ever done this?

I dont think that would be a problem

I have two people who have asked to be told if my gelding ever goes up for sale and I see that as a good thing and it makes me feel more at ease about ever selling him

In your case part of the trouble will be ensuring that the stable manager remembers or makes a note for any new manager

Bear in mind that these ponies get a lot of exercise and a different lifestyle so may not be as easy out of that environment
 
I am a riding school rider and, yes, it is certainly worth asking to be told if a particular favourite is coming up for sale.
But this needs to be done in writing, in a letter to the horse's owner. It is the owner of the horse and not the yard manager who will be taking decisions. In my case the RS owner was being pressed to sell, but, reading my letter and knowing my fondness for the horse, kindly promised she would not be sold. Eight years later I still hack that horse and riding her is still my highlight too.
 
Yes, but as Skib says, let the owner know and give them your contact details.
A friend worked on a holiday ranch in the USA for a couple of summers and became attached to one of the horses. On her second summer, she ended up buying the horse, paying for quarantine and the flight back to the UK.
Crazy maybe, but sometimes, only one special horse will do.

Yes I think the owner would be flattered. I know I would be happy to know there was a plan B for my horse, and you never know they might not be that bothered about him!

I should think a polo pony will need to retire eventually.
 
Thanks so much guys! I was worried that it would be considered rude!

The only problem is that with being in uni, it wouldn't be feasible to get him within the next three years - I doubt he would become available before then as he's really good at his job! Unless of course he gets an injury.. Obviously the last thing I want to do is seem like I'm taking the mickey, so was wondering about asking to be put in contact with the new owners if he is sold during this time..

Would that still be okay?
 
I was helping to bring on and spent time with one of my yard managers horses and asked to be told when he was going to be sold. I wasn't looking to buy at all...we bought him yesterday.
 
My friend fell in love with a racehorse she used to ride work on. She asked the owner if she could have first refusal when he retired. She got the call five years later and picked him up the next day.

Let them know your situation and say that you would like first refusal. Can't see why they wouldn't give you the chance, it saves them the hassle of advertising/rehoming etc and an instant home saves them livery money too.
 
In any case I don't think there's any harm in asking :).

You don't know unless you try, you have nothing to lose so I'd just write a polite letter asking for first refusal if he's sold and hope you get a call one day.
 
I don't think it would be rude at all - and I would certainly put the request in writing so the owner can put away somewhere safe, rather than rely on them remembering or writing your details down on a scrap of paper they unintentionally throw away later.
