My almost 10 month old filly measures 148cm tall behind but 140.5cm tall at her wither. I am trying to guestimate her adult height; say she's 90% of her adult height now.... but what height measurement would I use for the end calculation; her current wither height or her taller bottom height! There's a big difference in the end result of the two options.

I always thought it should be the wither height that was used in any calculations?
The other one I have tried in the past is to measure from the mid-knee (from the dip that horses have), down to the coronet band. If it measures 15in the final height will be 15 hands, 15 1/4" will be 15.1 etc. This worked quite well on several horses I know but no guarantees!

I'll give it a try and see what I get.

Last time, I tried the one which measures from the elbow to the ergot, and then back up again from the elbow. Made her estimated adult height to be 16.1hh, which I was fuguring to be a bit ambitious.

Guess all said and done, only time will tell :-)

You'd be surprised how accurate that one is usually!

I did a 7 month colt foal and it came out at 17 hands (imagine the shock, he's out of a 15 hander!) now he's four he's 17.3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's her breeding/type, that will give you some idea? If she's 14 hands at 10 months it sounds like she'll be a biggish girl anyway.

I did the mid knee to coronet band on my 2yo when he was 3 months old. I measured the string and it was 17inches. He is is now 16hh & 5/8ths and will be properly 2 on Easter Sunday.

Mine's by Centyfor (Polish WB, 16.2hh) ex TB mare (15.1hh herself: she was out of 15.2hh mare by 16.3hh stallion).

Well I think you might well be in for a big girl then with that breeding!

Hopfully!

But going back to the foal's dam. I bred her, plus a full brother to her. Had hoped both would be taller than they ended up. My foal's dam is exactly 15.1hh now (aged 8) and her brother stood just 14.3hh as a 3yr old when I sold him on. All my horses are fed individually balanced stud diets when young and are well kept and managed; I reckon it must be a genetics thing causing their smallish stature.

Finger's crossed my new Centyfor baby will break the family mold. If she makes a full-up 16.0hh I'll be happy. It's annoying, but I can't for the life of me remember how big her mum was at a year old. Getting too old to remember that far back!
