Is it very different to pure diy?

After spending a couple of years working away from home at various yards, I've moved back home and started freelancing. I have 3 horses at a very close diy yard where we've been for 8 years.

It's a nice yard, YO is very friendly and flexible, it's near home (3 miles and on route to my first client of the day)..other liveries are lovely. But there's no floodlights which makes riding in winter hard and the hacking is quite bad. I also don't really have anyone to ride with as most of them don't really ride. I really miss that after being on busy competition yards ect.

So I found a nice sounding yard. But they only do assisted livery. Which I don't want really...as I Literially adore doing my horses, especially at 6am in the morning when I'm the only one there...I always head off to work with a big smile on my face after doing them and I think I would miss it.

Other thing is s double the price. I can afford it but trying to save for a house deposit and every little counts. I wouldn't save on petrol as although I would only need to go once a day, it's double the distance (8 miles instead of 3.5).

But the facilities are great - indoor, outdoor (both with lights and jumps), internal stables which I prefer, off road hacking (and from my clients I know the area has excellent hacking too) instructor on site, all weather gallops..website also states a lot of the liveries do stuff together I.e.going to comps and xc schooling which would be great. I really miss th social side!


But i just love doing my horses 100% myself. I know it sounds petty but i want to do them completely. I literally cannot find anywhere around here that is diy with all year round turnout with a floodlit school. Am in Newbury if anyone has any ideas.

I moved to a yard that did assisted DIY as a minimum and I was very unsure but it was a lovely yard so I decided to try it. To start with I found it hard as I was (am) a bit of a control freak with regard to my horse but now I love it. I can still do both ends of the day if I want but on the days when I have a lot on it makes a huge difference as I can relax knowing my horse is looked after plus it saves me fuel. I am actually about to go onto part livery where he is completely looked after Monday to Friday I just have to ride as I am returning to work full time. Again I am unsure about how I will find it but I can't do everything with horse, work, dogs and young son x

I moved onto full livery a year ago after being DIY for years. I found it hard at first, but now I would never go DIY unless I had to. I have much more time to spend doing fun stuff with him, and I can still do jobs if I want to. The facilities at the new yard sound fab.

If they are only feeding and turning out then that sounds like it won't be impinging on you. You can still muck out to your own standards and go down in the morning as well if you want. Just think that the extra money would be paying for the facilities that you want. Give it a go and with an open mind - you might even enjoy the odd lie in. We are hopefully moving to Newbury later this year and I am hoping to start riding again and may well be looking for a share to start with. Good luck and enjoy.
