my mare has COPD, so i have to keep her on shavings and hayledge, she sometimes gets a yellow gunk coming out her nose if she has a bad patch and you can see her breathing gets funny, she will also cough when in hard work but hasnt dont this for about 2 years since i moved to a COPD friendly yard!
Get your vet out and they will listen to theyre chest and i think its something to do with a second breathe they take which the vet can hear through a thingy ( forgot the name, they go into your ears and have a metal circle on the end of a wirey thing! haha) the vet will recommend you put them on ventapulmin (sp?) but my mare has been off this for again about half a year and ive had no problems so hope this helps!
Ah see the horse in question was diagnosed with COPD in April. He has never had the typical cough or anything. Quite literally just a snotty nose down the one side and EIPH. He was stabled on easybed although this was changed to dust extracted paper in April. All hay is soaked and his box is immaculate. Brought him in yesterday and he was fine. Got called to the yard abit later to say he was coughing alot and breathing laboured. His Temp and resps increased (38.9/40bpm) but pulse normal. His Temp was the same this morning but resps at about 20. Nothing has changed at all in his routine. He in himself isnt too bad, eating and drinking as normal.
