astroturf WHY??

just been to look around a yard that offers diy livery close to home & was rather taken aback by the turnout they are use from october 1st untill may 1st, its astroturfed! there are stables there in small blocks of 4/6/8 & each block has 4 acres of summer turnout for their use & an acre of astroturf for the winter turnout.
shurley astroturf is slippery if they get hooning about & i dont want to think about the vets bill when my boy eats the stuff! they also do not allow hay to be put out in the paddocks so what do the horse eat whilst they are out at winter?
the owner is obiously very unhorsey as when i said my mare had suffered from Laminitis in the past he asked if she was likley to still be contagus!!!

ive decided im happier leaving my two out with the elements (must get shelters built) where we are all happy & fine as long as we have thick rugs than go there.

That's crazy! I remember never being allowed on the astroturf at school in winter, it was like an ice rink. YO sounds like a bit of an idiot!

This other yard obviously makes sure that the horses get exercised in winter by teaching them to play football on the Astroturf (well, it is the right season for footie!). Unless you plan on having to fork out to change all of your ponies' rugs (headcollars, boots, buckets etc.) to red because he's decided he's a Man U supporter and simply can't be seen wearing blue, then I would stay where you are at the moment EJ!

trouble knowing him he would want to change to a Norwich fan & green/yellow just isnt his colour.

i think the YO got the stuff second hand as it looks well used & has lots of white lines painted randomly on it (either that or its nicked from some local playing field!)
