I thought i must tell you all about a fantastic calmer that I have discovered! I had posted a couple of times previously asking if anyone had used the product but had no response - so i guessed it was not widely used.
anyway this is the story:
One of my horses is a 14.2hh welshy - she is very very opinionated and a difficult ride (although a fabulous pony 95% of the time) I have had her quite a long while but have stuggled with a couple of things with her.
1) we have 3 menages, in 2 of them she is great, but she has taken a dislike to one. so much so that she is almost unridable in there - spooking, spinning and rodeoing. I actually havent ridden her in there for over 18 months as she is, i consider, dangerous in there. It is a pain as the surface in there is great (much better than the other 2 menages)
2) When we go out jumping there is one particular venue that she hates and is very difficult there, again, spooking ect.
I have tried every trick in the book to de sensitise her but no luck - I have also spent a small fortune on calmers. Some of which i have had fairly good results.
Anyway i called the lady from the company, Debbi, she was so helpful and sent a trial sample.
I was very dubious.....

BUT!!! i have NEVER been so impressed by a product before.
I gave it to said pony and bit the bullet by going into the scary school. All i can tell you is the pony was happy, not even looking at anything. Ear pricked forward going and felt relaxed - we had a great session! I honestly could not believe it! Its not even that she was having a 'good day' as she is constistant in her erratic behaviour in there. NO spooks at all!
I then took her jumping at the venue she hates. Again no problems - I had a relaxed non spooky pony who was concentrating on her job!
AMAZING!!!!!!

The lady from the company has said that once the pony becomes happy and confident in these places i shouldnt need the calmer any more. It works out well as the calmer is one of the 'one off' varieties. Great for my pony as she is 100% the rest of the time so i would be loathe to put her on a 'full time' one.

I would like to add that i have no conection to this company - except that i have bought the product - but i felt that i must pass on the good news to others who are stuggling with their horses. Please give this product a go - it could change your riding!

google 'equine science' and take a look. ( i am rubbish at computers so dont know how to do a link!!!)

Ha ha might just take a look. Iv got a very spooky ex racer who is doing my head in, holds back all the time spooking at silly little things and spinning. Will stop dead if something in the distance is bothering him. He will not buck or rear but needs a little something to take the edge off. How much is it? How long would it last a 620kg horse?

Hi Monsters,
I dont know the answers - give Debbi a call - she is really helpful! I am so amazed by the product, and so are my freinds! None of us EVER thought my little monster could be so calm in those surroundings - i must also add that everything was against us too - wind rain ect ect!!
Give it a go!

if it it is that, its just L-arginine

which can be bought in any health shop very cheaply.

it has been linked to an increase risk of heart attacks in people and also inhaled is very damaging to the lungs so if fed as a powder needs to be dampened or risk causing lung problems.

alternates could be used to cause the same effect in theory also.

also found naturally in many foods.

so would be a lacking in diet shortage perhaps in the first place.

it’s the Amino Acid called Tyrosine that creates Serotoin that makes this work.

My daughter bought a trial sample of these equine science biscuits for her horse, a 6yo ex racer mare, not spooky as much as bolshy, and owing to some long standing pelvic issues which we only found out about and treated recently she doesn't like schooling and has thrown some spectacular tantrums in the school recently.

Tried them today before doing a workout in the school and she said her mare was totally better to work with, it didn't stop her throwing the odd strop but she got past it so much easier, so now she wants to buy a full pack.

She says you don't need to use them every day or all the time forever but she would like to give them a go for a few issues (loading, lone hacking, shows, schooling) and will also speak to them about the gastric ones as she has periods of windsucking (not doing it at the moment, but does go through stages)

I am always sceptical about these things, but she's willing to pay for it and if she believes it will help it probably won't do any harm.

eta- it comes in the form of biscuits which my daughter has described as looking like cat poo, but the horse nommed them up and seemed to find them really palatable

Full details please needed!

So is it a treat I can hand feed when needed? How much does it cost, how long does that amount last?

I'm always happy for a new calmer that isn't Magnesium based, he's already on Mag-Ox (cheap and pure!) for his hooves and currently he is having chamomile and vervain added to his feed (so it now smells like herbal tea! :D)

Well I won't trying this type of calmer on Mackenzie that's for sure, one of the benefits to L-arginine is increasing your sex drive! :D

But I might have some ;)

LOL this could work against me if I gave it my my boy. He likes the ladies a lot as it is :D

Seriously though...I'm quite interested but I've not found anything that has any effect whatsoever on my hyper crazy ex-racer at events/shows, and I need to preserve my money now where possible. Has anyone else seen extraordinary results with this calmer?

Our horse had them as a hand treat, the idea is you give them to the horse approx 45 mins before you do whatever you're going to do and the effect lasts for around 3-4 hours.

We paid £10 for a sample but I am given to understand they are sold in packs of 30 and cost £60, which sounds a lot but as you don't have to use them every day I guess you could make them last quite a while.

Well I only know this from some reseach done on the net, affects of ANDO etc as it causes an increase in blood to certain parts of the body and its known for increasing the sex drive, but it might not have the same effect on mare...and it might not actually work the same with horses...who knows  but I don't think I'd risk trying on my lad :D

So is it one treat at a time? £60 for 30, £2 each, if you have to feed 4 or 5 that adds up!

Might be interested in getting a sample though, or googling to see if anywhere else does the same active ingredient. Cheaper! :D
