There were reports of one horse dead but I haven't been able to confirm it. The facility was actually built for the 1987 World Dressage Championships and the flooded dressage ring was, until yesterday, bordered by a hedge, a permanent fence and very fancy judges' huts.
They did stop the show when the sky started to turn green (as one would . . .) but people were still loading up when it hit and there are about 50 horses on site regularly. Amazing, actually, there were no more injuries than there were.
That is terrifying! I was at Bicton (event) one year when a HUGE branch came down in a gale, off the enormous old oak tree slap in the middle of the tradestand area - a miracle nobody was killed, but that was smallfry compared to those pics
Apparently the pony that was thrown through the air was okay and no one was seriously hurt, except one person who was kicked. A couple of trailer flipped with horses and people IN them but everyone was removed successfully by emergency services. Quite the drama!
A friend of mine went by yesterday and says the photos don't do it justice - the place looks like a bomb site. It's the largest show facility for miles, with three indoor arenas, three HUGE outdoor schools, including a GP ring and the aforementioned, now gone, dressage ring so really a huge loss to the end of the season.
