Hi all I bought my six year old sports horse six months ago and have never managed to ride him properly. When riden or lunged without tack he arches his back and is unwilling to move forward. He is also unable to lie down and spends most his time bucking. My physio has suggest its a saddle problem however even with three months unridden he still arches his back! He is also unwilling to walk down hills and gets very distressed if pushed. Has anyone got any ideas?

Forgive me if i am wrong........ But.......

Trip trap, trip trap,

I would get the vet out tbh. A horse at my yard doesn't move well really backs off going up or down hill! Cnt turn circles, turns out he got a bone disease from racing. Althought any horse can get it.

Prob best to get it looked at :)

Your poor horse sounds in serious pain. Definitely get the vet. If it was purely the saddle causing bruising because it doesn't fit, 3mths off would have shown an improvement. Maybe the saddle doesn't fit anyway, as a separate issue, especially if you bought the saddle after buying the horse, I don't see how a saddle can be fitted to a back that's contorted in pain.

I wondered whether this was for real.

I looked back at your posts. You were looking for a horse that was free or a few hundred pounds. If you found one its not really surprising that it has problems.

Am Sorry to say ^^This^^ again
However what is done is done and 1st thing Monday morning call out your vet.

Hi all bought this horse sold as seen only because I knew him previously, when I bought him he was in poor condition and had vet and physio out to give him a once over, to which no problems were found. Was advised not to ride him for two months due to a lack of muscle and condition. Which naturally I followed. Ive since had physios out which found nothing but a few tight muscles. And just a note to rockiesmum this is real the reason I was previously looking for a cheap horse is I have to lovely pasture orniments that cost the earth. :-D

So how long have you rode him for?

I wouldn't be happy with either vet nor physio.

It comes down to how much are you willing to spend on this 'cheap' horse to try and figure out what's wrong.

If the vet and physio cannot find anything themselves, then body scans etc I'm guessing are the only way forward if they've done work ups on this horse and drawn no conclusion.....

Thankyou christmas sparkles, was planning on a second opition as its inportant to me to get him sorted. Never heard of having body scans done though? that must be worth ago.

It would be a last resort to do as it costs well into the thousands, you can have thermal scans, bone scans, etc done to determine problems. And most the time, not worth it on anything less than a top competition animal.

So. I would change your vet and chiro and get a 2nd opinion if you're serious.

Cheers will registar with new vets monday morning was just hoping someone else had come across the same thing! However it appears some folk are to quick to point fingers than help.

Basic work though, im genuinly struggerling for anyone to see past his saddle doesnt fit. And with him being a high spirted fellow he never looks in pain and if he gets wounded up theres no sign of any problems!!! It feels like your banging your head against a wall with vets

Have they put him a course of bute at any point at all to see if it makes a difference at all? [Not as a treatment, but just to see how much difference is made from when on painkillers/anti inflammatories to when he's normal ]
