OK, guys..this is a long saga with names omitted...
TWO years ago I bank-rolled a kiwi eventer to bring over a world cup showjumper(in NZ's top 3) to event with Bad/Burleigh as the target. Horse was to be syndicated within 3months of getting here...but, guess what, never happened. Horse cost me £73k(incl flight/ins/xrays etc). It was meant to be a short term loan!! I am not rolling in money but happened to have cash as had just sold house. The horse was clearly v talented and fab xc, very bold..the sj a complete doddle for him as like jumping a stick on the ground but not interested in dressage(understatement of the century!) so I said only way I cd get money back(and I had by then spent six months not sleeping, totally stressed by the horror of my financial situation and the stupidity of playing fairy godmother in the first place...)was to send it to a pro sj to be sold. So off it went...15 months ago!!!! YR just off ponies. The horse has won or been placed in every class it's been in( and it was the YR's second string all last yr so did a fair bit!). In the top 10 in Hickstead speed derby(on TV !). A real speed/1.35/1.40 specialist with wins at Le Touquet/Auvers etc. It's been advertised in H and H (big pic ads! V expensive!!..I paid, of course!!),Horsequest etc etc. Nothing. The price is now a third of what I paid...What do I do? It's one of the most consistent horses on the circuit...I don't know much about big league sj...I am an eventing fan. They(the pro yard) keep asking me what to do, but I am not the expert and they sell horses every day! I'm so miserable I cd howl ...for days/weeks... No-one seems to care much about my position, which is, admittedly, my own stupid fault for being kind to someone who needed help.Any advice?

you poor thing, i am afraid that i dont have any suggestions but i hope you sort out your situation soon. xxx

you have my deepest sympathies, what a complete nightmare of a situation. i can well imagine that you are having sleepless nights.
one or two rays of sunshine - you'll never do it again (!), and you do at least still have a sound, very good horse who is still jumping. plenty of people pay ££s for a horse only to have it go lame, kill itself, lose its bottle etc and be literally worthless. sorry if that's cold comfort though.
i think i'd try to get it with one of the real top pros. Whitakers, Tim Stockdale, someone like that. it's not going to cost more than you're paying already, and they're more likely to win big on the horse, show if off to the right buyers, and get you your money back if at all possible, i guess/hope.
was the dressage absolutely impossible for eventing? i guess so, if the rider gave up.
what about trying Pippa and William Funnell? if there's a hope in hell of the dressage coming right, Pippa could do it, and William's a top sjer...
very very best of luck.
the rider who you brought it over for - surely s/he should at least repay you the cost of flights etc if they can. or is the horse 100% yours now in lieu of that?

Know any good agents? Do they take commission AND livery while horse is with them?? Reluctant to keep pumping money into this! I don't pay anything to pro yard and they will get a lump sum on sale...ha,ha....

The agent will sell the horse on your behalf - you don't stable it with them. Bit like estate agents for horses.....

Thank you, kerrilli. Wd try William as I know him but prob not enough money in eventing to afford him..espec as he'd have to go through ranks and wd prob be too old by time he reached adv...he is 13...
Also see post above..I am not paying livery or entries..they keep prize money(£5k approx)
Event rider penniless....

Good luck

I keep looking at his advert on Horsequest, and whilst he is certainly worth big money unfortunately my pockets are only half that deep

Best of luck with selling him, he really should have gone by now.
