Well my boy has broken his own record - he has managed to go less than 12 hours with a full set of new shoes on!!! Just been rung by YO to say she has brought him in, called the farrier to replace lost shoe and he is now in his stable and lame.
This is after being off work for 5 weeks with lameness due to his pulling his shoes off, he's sound for a few days, now this.
He has a habit of putting his hooves in fencing and has just been moved to a new field without electric fencing - grrrr!
He is very flat footed so can't go without shoes without getting very footsore, yet he's pulling them off so frequently that soon there's going to be nothing left to put them on - more nail holes than hoof!
Any suggestions?

Have you tried over reach boots on in the field? I know that worked for one of the TB's at our yard. He wears them all the time now as he managed to pull a shoe in the stable (he's a pro at it!)

Other option would be try another farrier...not blaming the farrier but a different style of shoeing might suite better.

Or (and the most dramatic) try barefoot? You'd be amazed at how well even flat footed TB' can go barefoot though if you compete affiliated you might not be able to usehoof boots at comps

I agree, try overreachers. My sports horse lives in them permanately as he pulls his shoes off. one time he pulled one off and came down on the nails - Youch ! I have no probs now he lives in good overreachers. Try it, it may work for you and your horse.

sorry but you need to chat to farrier and if he can't help change to one that can

plus you need to chat to YO about keep your boy in field with electric fence in so a repeat can't happen

what a total pain

Overeach boots

Or, ditch shoes and use the boots instead.

Good luck!

Our neds are on an eight week cycle with the farrier, but Dizz has be been flipping different - she has a front shoe off usually around week one, three or seven. Ho hum.

Any suggestions with pulling back shoes off? My friend's horse stands in the stable with his back feet really close together, shifts his weight from one foot to the other and presto! the shoe is off.
Managed to also do it in the field.

Overreach boots but preferably the horrible pull on ones cos the others don't last. Although i did know a horse that managed to remove one or boot and the shoe off the other foot

Maybe try those sausage boots so he can't get his feet close enough together

I have to have overreach boots on all four feet as one of the livery horses is just so bl***y irritating to the others and practically stands on my horse and pulls my boys hinds off. I have just got him in from the field now to ride and hes lost his overreach boot and shoe from his right hind and a huge chunk missing from his fly rug on the same side. bet I know who did that to him. Not the farriers fault - just circumstances and a really irritating horse.

sorry I should have been more specific, the horse at the yard were over reach boots on all four feet as he can pull the back off as easily as the front.

i use rubber with Velcro strap overreach boots as jayjay is always pulling fronts off, although new farrier put side clips on and shod him tighter and shorter and he still has them on 1 week later

my lad used to be able to pull shoes and overreach boots off in one go - the only way to find the shoes was to look for the boots!

my farrier spent 2 years getting his feet shorter and more upright and problem solved. we've gone 3 years now without losing a shoe!

sounds like yours needs his feet adjusting to help him keep his shoes on.

The only thing that worked for my TB was to shoe him with racing plates..... they fit flush to the foot and can't be trodden on or caught on anything!

I am the queen on lost shoes!! My story starts last year when my horse starting to lose shoe after shoe and go lame for a few days and then there wasn't enough hoof for farrier so would lose shoe again, it was just awful. SO, I called the vet, they xrayed, showed nothing too serious apart from a bit of inflammation due to lost shoes. The problem was horn quality. He was immediately put on newmarket hoof supplement, and had imprint stick on shoes for nearly a year. The insurance paid for this - thank goodness as they are £150 a pair (not set!). A year later his hooves are transformed. My advice would be : get a really good farrier who understands your horses problem, get the horse on a good hoof supplement, get the field management right, I can't turn my horse out with more than one horse as he plays in the field, try these imprint shoes if you can afford them, they are just fantastic as if they come off there is no damage to the hoof. I really hope you get it sorted. Its so frustrating as I know.

good luck
