It all started in november last year when my lad became not well called vet out and was told he had a viral infection was given injection and told to put him on double dose of garlic. He never really improved over the next couple of months vet was called out a total of 5 times last time he was given antibiotics and ventapolmon cause his breathing was really noisy was told he had a secondary infection he improved while he was on the antibiotics and was fine until he came of them. So decided to get a second opinion from a second vet she examined hime and she told me she thought he had an allergy maybe caused by the viral infection he had a heave line snotty nose but she coulldn`t here anything when she listened to his chest so she gave him antibiotics and a steriod inhaler but after being of the antibiotics he seems to be getting worse again. I have put him on hilton herbs freestyle to see if this works he will have been on this 2 weeks on monday. His hay is soaked and feed from the ground he is out about 16 hours a day only coming in as he won`t stay out all the time. I just don`t no what else to try.

i've had exactly the same problem with my 15yr old mare and tried loads of different drugs from vets, but i now think it is a pollen allergy as she has become a headshaker too, i have tried various herbal supplements that didn't really do much, was recomended winergy ventilate by quite a few people on this forum so that one is next on my list to try don't forget that herbs can take a long time to become effective too, good luck

Poor you, seems as though youve tried everything! It does sound like an allergy. Im convinced the weird weather this year is not helping some of the horses who have respiration probs/allergies. Good luck with getting him better... one way or another!

I think that will be the next route we take the vet did mention it. She said it might be something deep rooted and he might need to be scoped to check.

I'm going thru the exact same thing with one of mine at the moment, tried Ventipulmin, didn't touch him and made him bad tempered (he is the sweetest soul around).

Now trying the Winergy Ventilate and Equus herbal Mixed Pollen tabs along with riding in a homemade nosenet all the time and a syringe of Naff KoffEze before we ride. He's been on all this for 2 weeks on Monday, it can take up to a month to get into the system but i do believe there is a slight improvement already.

If this dosen't work then we are off to have him scoped as well although the vet dosen't think they will find anything. This all started last winter when we had two lots of really bad hay delivered but the farmer insisted there was nothing wrong with it despite the ponies not touching it....... it seems to have kickstarted an allergic reaction in my little fella.

I know how you feel with the breathing, mine is fine until exercised and then he sounds like a pensioner who smokes 60 a day! He's only just 8 yrs old ! Unfortunately once an allergy like this takes hold, there isn't much light at the end of the tunnel, it's just finding the best way to deal with it to make life easier for them.

Best of luck with yours xx

I had exactly the same with Bert when I got him it cost me nearly £1000 in unecessary vert fees.

He truned out to have COPD, it was so severe that the vet could not even hear any noise in his wind.

the only way it was resolved was by putting him on haylage, bedmax shavings ventilate supplement and turning him out as much as possible. He also needs to be kept away from hay and straw which affect the neighbouring stables.
