At the risk of sounding like a muppet re long lining...?

Will be taking you lovely people's advice and start long lining my 2nd old jrt. She is fine in parks/open spaces runs about comes back etc. But as soon as we get near any wooded areas she is like a dog posessed and of like a rocket.

Since she went off on her own with my oh I can't trust that she will come back like she used to ( run off the track then back to us to check in was the norm).

Now to the point how do you long line.. Will most likely be using a lunge line..
When to have it on?
Commands?
Etc...

Lunge lines are grand but can be quite heavy - I have just paid £6 for ten metres of building cord, tied onto a trigger clip so I don't care how muddy or wrecked it gets.
Whatever you do, cut the hand loop off and tie a knot in it to mark the end of the line. The loop can catch on things or you can get your hand stuck in it.
And gloves help!!!!

I would attach it to a harness for a JRT. But you can use a flat collar fastened snugly or a flat link chain with the links shortened.

I would start in a fenced or secure area and have the dog wearing it in the garden so it is not an alien object.

I have it on all the time in the beginning, just trailing along the ground. I team it with hand feeding (see Jericho's post about her JRT for explanation) and whenever the dog comes back, ANY time, even if you haven't asked, food reward.
If you only ever recall the dog when it wants to follow something interesting, of course it will not want to come back. So lots of recalls throughout the walk or training session, always reward the recall.

The long line comes into play when you are being ignored. So 'here/come' etc - you are being ignored.
You can tug or step on it to stop the dog, when it looks back, recall and reward, or if you are being properly ignored, hold it and reel the dog in, again, reward when the dog comes back or like me the other night, if the dog is tanking off you can chase and get ten metres of purchase on the little sod and stop him before he gets splatted on the road you can also add little things like running backwards to increase the speed of recall.

It is important to read the dog and recall BEFORE the nose goes down and the tail goes up and the dog is off following a scent - you need to get in there with the interesting ball or food before the dog is off hunting, which is infinitely more rewarding!

I use a whistle as mentioned as it gets attention better than a voice if the wind is up etc.

Do not do as i did, throw ball whilst long lined seemed to have wrapped round your ankle and floor yourself. (Pretty common sense)

Oh yeah, I did that once, B decided to chase a passing bike, I decided to let him, and give him a proper pop when he reached the end of the line, I instead got pulled into the air horizontal, then landed like that. It was like something out of a cartoon. You will adopt the look of a tap dancer as you skip over the line as it unwinds although should not be **too** bad with a JRT
