Did you have your puppy microchipped and for the boys have their bits off?

My vet said he didn't like microchipping them too young, but he's 5 months now, so was thinking about going back and talking to him about it. He also said it's nicer for the dog to do it when they were having their bits off, which I can understand, but I think he may be a bit young for that.

My Boston's breeder microchips all her dogs at twelve weeks, so Stella was done before we got her. Incidentally, thanks for this post--I've just realised that I don't know whether or not my adopted pug is microchipped!

My pups breeders vet wouldn't microchip them that small....

I did ask because I saw from ads that some were done. My vet didn't want to do it when I took him in for his vacs, but if I'd pushed it he would have if you know what I mean. He just didn't advise it.

I had mine microchipped and spayed last week at the age of five months and three weeks - vet didn't seem concerned at all except to discuss the pros and cons of spaying before a first season which won't apply to your situation, lol. Certainly didn't have anything bad to say about microchipping at that age.

I chipped 2 of our rescue spaniels at 8 weeks when they left....they where not going know where without a chip

Then 2 at 9 weeks and will chip these 2 tomorrow and they will be 10 weeks.

We had Chloe done at about 14weeks I think! Vets didnt say anything about them disagreeing. I cant think why it'd be dangerous? Better they dont get stolen/easily retrieved!!!

And Chlo was spayed at 6months xxxx

it wasn't about it being dangerous, more the discomfort level at such young age I think.

gonna take him in tomorrow I think. It's right at the front of my mind after he disappeared for what was probably only 30 secs but felt like forever today and I totally panicked! (he was attacked my a dog a couple of weeks ago and today a dog barked at him and he shot off, I called him but he was going in the wrong direction and he ran out of my sight. I genuinely think he thought I was that way because his recall always has been 100% perfect, I think in the panic, he didn't hear which direction my voice was coming from. He did come back though. But the feeling of having lost him was horrific! Hence my thoughts about chippping! lol! sorry for long explanation!)

I can understand not neutering too young but why not micro chipping? Having seen the size of the needle its going to hurt whatever age they are - its massive!! If the doctor approached me with a needle that size I'd be out the door in seconds!

A breeder I know microchips for this area, he used to do pups before they left for their new home, i.e. around 8 weeks. In fact its probably good to do them then because they are able to go back in with their littermates and soon forget about it.

How do they react? Is it worth waiting until he's snipped? Or is it really not that big a deal?

It's really not a big deal. I have the most stupidly vocal and wussy dog - she howls, yammers and 'sings' all day long and howls bloody murder if I accidentally step on her toe - and she didn't make a peep when the chip went in, and in fact was too busy licking the poor nurse's face to even notice what had happened.

Just try not to look at the needle, it's ominously big but she didn't seem to feel a thing.

Ours have always had them done when they were about 10 weeks at the same time as their 2nd jab (so it's not done on their first ever trip to the vet). Our vet offers a £60 package for puppy check, both jabs and microchip. Interestingly my friend has Ped's litter brother and her vet wouldn't microchip him until he was bigger.

Ped had his bits off at 10 months. I wanted him ear tattooed at the same time but the vet receptionist gave me a very disaproving look and said it's not necessary because he's microchipped *head on desk* it's the same as the microchip v. freezemark debate.

Gizmo was done at 3 months OH wanted him done when he went for the chop, but i wanted him done ASAP as his recall wasnt 100% i couldnt live with myself if he got lost. Vet put some food down for him and he never moved

vets say 6 months for the chop however if they are both dropped they can get done sooner gizmo is getting done on tues and he is just 5 months.

The problem with microchipping young puppies is that there is more chance of the chip 'migrating'. All this means is that when it is looked for you need to do a more extensive seach with the scanner. I've had several pups microchipped at eight weeks and in fact the Bateson report into dog breeding practices recommended that pups should be microchipped before sale.

my kittens got done with their second injections so they were pretty small. Didn't seem to partiularily mind

Jendie, B's is up around his ears somewhere, I nearly had a fit when he was competing in November, the bloke couldn't read the tattoo and the scanner wasn't picking up the chip and we would have been disqualified if he didn't have the correct ID

When it beeped I was like 'YESSSSSSSS!'

Like I said before, it is kind of a breed requirement for us these days (thanks to a shyster breeder in the 1980s passing off substandard dogs as superstars!!!)
