As some of you may know, i am in the process of very slowly bringing my youngster back to fitness after an injury and his monster stage. At the mo, we are just hacking/playing in the field (aka schooling) and ground work but can only ride at w'ends due to work/dark nights.

I am working with him to get him going forwards more, (he is lazy and hard work at the mo!) Just wondered how fit or at what stage you would start having lessons to see if i can get him going a little better/improving both of us......?

Thank you

Hey! My horse has just come back after nine months off. I ride him daily, but as soon as we were working in all 3 paces, (only short canter bursts) I started having lessons again. I needed the help with my boy because he had become resigned to doing b*gger all, so was realy quite naughty (lazy, with schizo rodeo attacks every 20 mins or so) when he first came back into work...

I brought my mare back into work after 7 months turned away. Like you, I was trying to decide when to reintroduce lessons and putting it off until it was 'worthwhile'. We went throught the walking phase, then the 'schooling' in trot. she wasn't fit enough for canter, but I decided to try a lesson and realised immediately that it was the right way to go. I found it so valuable having the 'eyes on the ground', feedback and guidance even at that stage.

I am not a rider with lots of experience though, but I expect even more experienced riders would still derive the benefit.
