My horse has a partial subluxation of the atlas and we have been told to try osteopathy. Does this work? Who do people recommend. Is there a national body?

How interesting - how was this diagnosed? Osteopathy is an excellent way to restore normal mobility and symmetry throughout the whole body (clearly I am biased!!). Yes there is a governing body - the General Osteopathic Council. I can recommend excellent osteos who treat animals as well as humans, depending on where you are in the country.

Also consider cranio sacral therapy and the Masterson Method.

The methodology is secondary to the talent of the therapist though :)

This is a young horse who has difficulty cantering on the right rein. He was gelded by general anaesthetic upside down and the problem deveoped after this. He has had thermography and Xrays at the vets and is said to be suffering from " somatic dysfunction" There is a narrowing of the space between the vertical ramus of the jaw and the wing of the atlas bilaterally, more marked on the left. There is hypertrophy of the muscle over the atlas. There is some other stuff in the report but I think that the main crux of it. They want to give him osteopathy under sedation but he reacts badly to sedation, and to be frank I cannot see why he needs it the sedation, that is. All input is gratefully received. I have nevr had this kind of problem in many yuears of keeping horses!
