My connie has had to have atropine put in his eyes around 3 weeks ago, the drops were stopped over 2 weeks ago but his pupils are still not back to normal. Has anyone got experience of this? My vet is not concerned it is taking so long but does say it isn't normal and that he would usually expect the effects to have worn off in a weekish. My poor boy is locked in a dark stable until they are back to normal and is so so bored. Has anyone been through this and can offer some light at the end of the tunnel plesae?

Sorry Jo, I am very surprised by this myself. How much was he given and for how long? My mare had one lot of drops which wore off after 48 hours. Do you have the bottle of drops? If so, I would ring the manufacturers if you cant get any answers from the vet.

Let us know how you get on?

Thank you, I threw out the bottle yesterday sadly. He had a couple of drops in each eye twice a day for 4 days I think then they were stopped, but that was over 2 weeks ago now. He is due for a check up again next week so I will keep you informed.

I would probably PM Halfstep as her OH is a vet, failing that PM Star - they should be able to put your mind at rest

Thank you - my vet is great and does say he is disappointed that they haven't returned to normal, I have to say that anything with Patrick takes an unusual turn or takes 3 times as long as any other horse so I shouldn't be surprised really.

Even my vet talks about the Patrick effect and says he is not a normal horse and hasn't read the vet manuals!

JoC - if you have a really thick, dark face mask, your ned might be able to go out for a few hours in that. Can't he go out overnight if you could get someone to bring him in before dawn?

Our pony had to have atropine administered after getting a bramble stuck in her eyelid that scratched the surface of the eye. Even though the eye healed in a couple of days the effects of the atropine took about three weeks to wear off. Apparently a dilated pupil is better than it being stuck closed. I was convinced her eye would never go back to normal.

She was turned out with a fly mask with gaffer tape over one side which she had to wear for well over two weeks but thankfully it's completely back to normal now.
