Had the go a head from vet today to start turning my boy out again. He has been on box rest for 4 weeks. I have fenced off a small paddock to start with and will electrify it. I was going to turn him out without his rug on for 1/2 hour so that he got zapped if he got to cocky ( he will be doped!!) but forecast is rain (he is clipped) so I was wondering how do you attach the electric fence to the front of rug so that he gets a zap? Thanks

I'd turn him out without the rug if you are that worried he will go through the electric - half an hour in the rain won't harm him, especially if he then has a cooler and a nice thick rug on top.

Not too sure I understand your question, sorry.

Same here. Why would you want to attach an electric fence to a rug? Such a dangerous thing to do

I know what you mean - with the loop at the front?

We did it to try and keep the horses in their paddocks and no luck as it slipping inside the flap :(

Take a couple of meters of electric tape and put it under the rug front so it touches his chest. Then wrap around the straps and front of rug so if the fence is touched the zap goes through as if unrugged.

Lol, you quoted someone above saying that you didn't understand the question/what the OP meant.

However, even though you don't understand, you've decided its dangerous!!

tickled me too Flamehead.
i had a strip that threaded through both front buckles & then inside her rug front down & out the bottom & looped back up to the buckles if that makes sense.
Made no bl**dy difference to the mardy cow though! she still walked straight through it.

Aoibhin, this would be the way I'd do it too although whether it would work or not.

Best way to do it is to hook it up to the mains, not a battery, then it gives them a proper shock every time.

Funniest thing I've ever seen was my youngster learning about electric taping. Run up, zap, run away. Run up, zap, run away. Run up, zap...............for about an hour!

Ok.. Lets start again. You put the electric fence through the rug, To deliberately 'zap' it? Do you hold the horse while it has do endure this little excercise? Or let it go? As I asked Flamehead, enlighten me...

No, you just run tape through the front of the rug so that if it does decide to run through tape, it gets a zap. Whereas rugs normally act as insulators, so they dont get zapped. If the tape is there, then the zap SHOULD pass onto them, bypassing the rug, and give them a zap.

NO, you put some of the fencing tape through the rug & then when the horse touches the live fence it goes via the strip attached to the rug to them rather than the zap being abzorbed by the rug.

PMSL!!!!! Aggghhh, I feel like a completely f*nny now. I'm old AND blonde, what do you expect:D

Lol =] It doesnt always work though....cos you've got to get quite a good connection for it to transfer so by that point they're normally through the tape anyway.

Best thing is to have it mains energised if at all possible.

Sorry peeps probably my fault for not making it clear!!

Thank you to those tha replied!!

Sunshine19, glad we made you smile!!

I'm not a horrible horse owner, i'm not trying to do anything horrible or dangerous, quite the opposite, just want him to be safe and not reinjure himself!!

LOL, I get it now!!! I had images of the horse literally attached to the fence so that it could get zapped!

OP hope it goes well tomorrow! With the sedative he might just put his head down and graze.

Gosh you can learn so much from this thread... I didnt know about doing this, yet it makes perfect sense... I too have horses like all others who completely ignore the electric fence with rugs on, hench why I always have broken electric fencing, going to try this out, thanks guys for explaining :)
