My six year old TB gelding has become very attached to a mare at the yard and I'm worried that he will hurt himself if things continue as they are
He is turned out in a large field with approx 10-15 other geldings, all of which he is used to and gets on well with, and there is plenty of grass. At the moment, the mares are in the next field and my horse spends the whole time grazing at the fence or standing staring over the fence at the mares. If they are out of sight, he whinnies and gallops up and down the fence. There is one mare in particular that he seems to adore, and when she is brought in or is out of sight, he goes nuts. He even tried to jump the gate one day when she was in another field across the lane from him. He must have chickened out at the last minute as he fell over and was covered in cuts and grazes. It almost got to that stage again today; the mare was brought in and he was frantic, galloping up and down and whinnying desperately. I brought him in before he got hurt and he was in a right state, like the last time, really sweated up and breathing heavily. He whinnied the whole way in and I can still hear him now
I don't know what to do with him. He is fine when stabled, he will whinny if she goes past his stable but he settles down again quite quickly. He is fine to be ridden. He has never spent any time with this mare, they have never once been turned out or ridden together. I work and live at the yard, so he can't move fields. I'm seriously concerned for his safety, especially as he is soon to be living out 24/7. Can anyone offer me any advice?
