I guess most of the comments are from the US, not sure carrying a gun, knife or tazer would be the first thing I would think of when preparing to hack out. Training your horse to push into an attacker makes sense but in reality I guess most of us would just try and get away by whatever means possible.

A similar video of using your horse's body to push against an attacker was posted on a US forum, and all these people replied, "Oh, I wouldn't bother with spinning my horse's butt into a bad guy; I just carry my 9mm everywhere I go."

So if you go out trail riding in the US, you have the comfort of knowing your fellow riders have firearms shoved into their belt. Obviously makes it safer, the US having one of the highest gun homicide rates in any western country not in the middle of a civil war.

Thanks for posting this, I am sure a lot of people would automatically try to back out of the situation, but this is not going to be effective, so lets all train Neddy to play with a big ball and learn to turn on the forehand and things like pushing gates open might help, in training horse to move forward confidently on command.
Smacking the attacker with the head or teeth might be good.

I think I'd probably instinctively go for a couple of slashes with my schooling whip, but that made interesting viewing. Any attacker would need a box to stand on to be able to pull me off backwards - joys of humunga horses!

Haha! Always carry a schooling whip excellent self defense against rouge dogs too! I reckon that would also be my response!

Think if I used a gun when on H I'd end up in a ditch along with the attacker with H haring off up the road!

I hack alone a lot fortunately he's scared of men so hopefully while it would mean he wouldn't turn towards them they'd find it hard to get hold of him.

Think I'd try and get away first (yet trotting or cantering on a road surely they could catch you up?) If not I always carry a schooling whip as he can be nappy so provided they hadn't got it off me they'd be receiving a whack with that

Thanks for posting mijods. I saw this on FB and thought it was a very good point that if you pull back they might well end up pulling off your bridle. my poor horse would be far too polite to ride into somebody so I do get the point about training them to do this beforehand. I didn't watch very closely but it looked as if the horse in the vid was a police horse so might be a bit unrealistic for most of us…. but very thought provoking anyway.

If only we were allowed 9mm's (although personally I would opt for .40 S&W or 10mm as they do far more damage) in a shoulder holster!

I do sometimes worry about strange people around, especially since some poor man was run over twice with his own van recently just down the road! Thankfully he'll be ok, but very very badly battered.
It's a tiny little village, where everyone knows everyone! You just don't expect it! I always carry a schooling whip, mostly for moving branches out the way, but it's handy to have in case something does happen!
I honestly don't know what Ned would do! I'd hope he would either protect me or run, and not throw me off!

Frank is Welsh so likes to walk through people anyway so I guess we'd be fine though it isn't something I routinely worry about.
