Last night the fence was cut and the gates removed from our fields near to Hythe in Kent. A make shift halter was discovered in the field and all the horses escaped onto the road with the exception of 2 horses who for some unknown reason stayed put.A silver 4x4 was seen to be chasing the horses up the road. The horses were discovered 2 miles away. One however was still missing and discovered 15hours later in a ditch. She is fortunately unharmed, pretty amazing given her age(28)which is most likely due to the ditch being dry and the weather being warm. Obviously we are all greatful that the horses are safe and well. Some of them have minor grazes and a couple are now lame .This happened at approximately 7pm last night.During the day a man was seen in the field by a neighbour wearing a dayglo vest walking amongst the horses. He didn't think anything of it and it may not be related but please be vigilant and report anything strange to the police. No plaits are thought to have been discovered in any of the horses manes nor anything unusual notice in or near the boundary fencing.

So sorry to hear this, what an awful shock, but glad your horses are ok.

Oh my gosh this is far tooo close to home for my liking. My boy is getting re branded tomo as first brand didnt come through. Can I just say thank you for putting this on here for us to know about.

Have spoken to my local tack shops about a communication board about yard break ins etc. As I think its needed.

I hope the horses are Ok Sarah

ps. New to the forum however this is the reason I joined as the farm where mine are keep getting broken into and I think as horse owners we need to be sharing this info x

I'm in East Kent too - the Kent Horsewatch website doesn't seem to be kept up to date so perhaps we can create an email network for local horse owners. Being aware is key to preventing these awful people harming our horses and stealing our property. Unfortunately the Police are not very interested unless a crime has been committed.
PM please if you would like to get something going in the area.

My advice would be to move the horses elsewhere for a while as they may come back.

Also have each of the horses Freezemarked (on their shoulder so that it can be seen when ridden) and also Microchipped as a mater of urgency. Take photos of them from the front and rear and also both sides so that in the event of them being stolen you can immediately send out photos of them. Also register your horses on the national horse register.
