Sorry this answer is a few months late but I don't come on very often! I have a 12 year old Border Collie who has Discoid Lupus Erythmatosis. She has had it for quite a few years now and it is always worse in the summer as sunlight aggravates the condition. She gets sores around her nostrils and eyes mainly, but it also flares up in between her toes, on her tummy and around her bum. I am very fortunate that my vet is a skin specialist and he usually treats her as follows:
At the first sign of a flare up she has a weeks course of Prednisilone. He tries to keep steroid treatment to a minimum as long term use is not good. She also has 500mg of Nicotinamide (Vitamin B3) twice a day and Oxycare 250mg twice a day.
I find that if I keep her on the Nicotinamide and Oxycare through the summer months the symptoms are minimal and do not cause her too much distress at all. I also keep an Aloe Vera plant and have found that applying the AV goo makes her tummy less irritating.
I don't know where your friend lives, but if she is anywhere near Shropshire my vet does take referrals from other practices. If I can help in any other way feel free to PM me.
