same happend with my pony, he worked it out straigh away, although he much prefers to poo in them rather than drink from it...

My old mare hated the one in her stable and refused to drink from it as the noise when it filled up frightened her so she had to have a bucket instead fortunatly her son was quite happy to drink and unfortunatly poo in his which was truely disgusting to clean out!
And before you all shout at me yes I tried not giving her any other water and in the morning she was parched so for safety sake and no colic a bucket won the day!!

Mine didn't at first we got them two weeks ago. He soon worked them out, I stuck an apple in mine. The juice apple soon made him change his mind!

my mare didn't drink out of her automatic drinker, I even filled it with apples to try and get her to just go near it but for some reason she was terrified of it. I also like to know that my horse is drinking normally or has deff had planty to drink like after a HT, you can't tell with automatic drinkers.

Gin wouldnt go near hers at first. I turned the water off and put food in it to encourage her to go ear it. She would stretch her neck as far as she could to get the food. I put a bucket in and decreased the amount of water in it each night. She soon started to drink out of her drinker.
My youngster didnt know how to use his so he had a bucket for a while. He had dust on the top of the water so I knew he wasnt using it. Eventually the dust disappeared so he must use his drinker now.

I used to have automatic drinkers and now we don't - mainly cos my sodding youngsters used to unscrew the pipes that ran into them and flood the stables

Tried everything to discourage them but it didn't work so we gave up, turned them off and now use giant buckets which bizarrely, they don't touch!
