Hi everyone, I am a new user to this forum who would really appreciate any advice/suggestions re the above subject line.

I am looking to buy a 2004 SWB Shogun to tow a trailer so that my little lady and I can become more mobile. (well, little is being ever so polite! I have a broad 14.3hh cob who seems to have one hobby - eating!)

However, my husband and I are now debating which transmission to go for! Automatic or Manual?

My husband wants an automatic as it has more gadgets, but I have been told that a manual is better to tow with!

I am now very confused!

and would really appreciate any information that could help our decision.

Can anyone help me please?

Thank you.

Hi i have a automatic swb pajero, a bit thirsty on the juice but on towing i wouldnt swop for the world, so easy and smooth and used most weekends towing my daughter and her pony plus friends ponio to shows and in all this mud has had no problems getting through the mud just put the car into low ratio gear and away you go, hope that makes sense.

Manual is cheaper and easier to maintain than automatic and towing naturally puts a lot more load on a clutch.

Manual every time, I have the SWB Shogun, it's great, though sometimes a bit small for people, tack & large greyhound!!

Thank you for your help. It was nice to read Savannah's response that getting off a muddy field in an automatic is possible - that was my main concern as I have only towed once and that was in a manual.

For towing you cannot beat an automatic. With a 4x4 you get the low range anyway if you need it, and auto gives a far smoother ride. Modern autos use only fractionally more fuel than manuals, and it is one less thing to worry about when towing!
