Hello

I am considering getting my first ever horse after riding every other day for most of my life. Now i woulf be looking for a happy hack no more than £2000, would be entering no competitions. I was wondering what annual sum some of you would think it would cost to have a horse, it wold be kept on a part livery basis.

Thanks

It costs a lot!! Anyway here's a rough breakdown

Part Livery (presuming the cost of £70 p/w) : £3640
Shoeing (every 7 weeks at £70 a set) : £ 560
Rugs, Tack, Misc. (presuming the horse doesn't come with any/many) : £1000

So you're looking at £5200 a year minimum.... Hope this helps!

If it's DIY it works out at about £70 all in a week in our area. You need to think about insurance, Farrier, worming, Dentist, as well as the usual feed, livery, bedding etc.
If you are not sure whether you can afford it, I would loan or part loan first of all so that you can get a feel for it. There is nothing more worrying than owning a horse that you can't afford

Round here, £200 a month average is possible (less in summer, more in winter)

That includes everything. But basic!!

Livery (DIY) - £50
Insurance - £30
Shoes (fronts) - £17.50 (if done once every 8 weeks)
Vet/dentist costs (saving) - £30

The rest of the money is spent on everything else... basic lifestyle, low cost.

If I wanted a barefoot horse out 24/7 with only that and insurance it would cost me £100 a month max in the summer.

I budget £400 a month for my horse (assisted DIY) but usually spend about £50-£100 less.

He cost me £1500 and he's a fab hacker :D

For Hairy, he probably costs us no more than 60 a month! He lives out....isn't shod....doesn't require hard feed....Perfect horse :)

this is my overall cost for the first 3 years

first year including 5000 buy cost, shes not just a happy hacker
£7,950

second year
£3,632

third year
£3,385

only catch with mine is she lives rent free at home all summer but if you add 1000 to the prices there that would be all year round

If you have a happy hacker, and don't need 'facilities', then I'd suggest looking for somewhere for just grass livery, and have him/her living out 24/7. The right horse will enjoy that just as much, if not more, than being stabled, it's more cost effective, and takes less time. Which means more time for hacking!!
I do this with my two, and pay £80/month grazing for the pair, have front shoes on at £35 each every 6 weeks, no hard feed, but we do give ad-lib haylage in the winter.
If you hack, then location is far more important than facilities IMO.
