Hi everyone,
I am just wondering if it is okay to ask how much everyone pays on average per month for their horse. And also how much do you pay for insurance if it’s okay I ask that. Mine would be on full livery just to give you an idea.
thank you

£420ish full livery
£360ish part
This massively depends on the area you live in and the facilities you get.

mines not insured, I put money in a savings acc and have a credit card. Anything hugely over the limit/life threatening/limiting would be PTS.
70 6 weekly for farrier

feed & supplements £20 per month (forage inclusive in my livery deal)

chiro (needed) £70 6 weeks

i think about £1000 a month is about right. I compete unaff and not regularly either.
i reckon I can spend £100-200 a month on comp fees, training and arena hire.

I try buy second hand but that doesn’t always work when you NEED a specific item in a specific size at short notice.

I have a 4x4 and trailer to maintain as my transport.
Not sat down to actually work it all out because I am not totally sure how I afford it ?

don’t have much left over at the end of the month!!

Whilst my horse was on true full livery (i.e. including exercising), it was costing IRO £800 per month, in Sussex.

Insurance wise, £50 per month for reasonable vet cover through The Insurance Emporium (E&L).

ETA: my farrier is an additional £135 every six weeks or so.

For my 13hh I budget £400 for basics (DIY livery, feed, hay, trimming etc) but that can easily double when we compete regularly

then plus keeping the horsebox on the road

It varies wildly depending on where in the country you are. People on here from the SE were shocked that in Yorkshire full livery is £80-£120 a week with excellent facilities. DIY £25-£35. I pay £280 a month for youngstock livery which includes all care, hay, bedding, vaccines, farrier, worming and ground training such as trailer training, grooming etc. I pay £35 a quarter for insurance for external injuries up to £1500 and public liability as it’s a condition of being on the yard, but I have an emergency credit card with a huge limit on it as my “real” insurance.

When I was on part/full livery I'd budget about £900 a month.

On assisted DIY I budget about £500 but am usually under this.

Whatever you budget, I would add a buffer in too.

I'm on £60 per week assisted DIY (it's a nice yard - 24/7 turnout all year round, hot water, floodlit arena, lovely hacking, hay and basic feed included) and I reckon I probably average about £500 per month, over the year. That would include insurance, basic vet bills for jabs etc, farrier, fun ride entry fees etc. However it doesn't really average out nicely - some months are much more expensive than others depending on when shoeing falls, whether I need to pay someone to clip him, whether I have lessons, saddle fitter etc.

The above poster's quote sounds about right to me for full livery so that would work out at £600 - £800 per month for me.
