I have been having a think and I would like to give up my current job and work with horses. I am on an ok salery at the moment and know I will have to take a wage cut if I work with horses. I am currently doing my BHS Stage 2 and would plan to take my stages up to instructor level if I worked on a Riding School.

I am very experienced with horses and own my own.

I am not to knowledgeable about other equestrian jobs, so perhaps someone could enlighten me as so other jobs and average wages associated with them?

And is it minimum wage for Riding Instructors? I suppose I could do freelance aswell. I am just trying to work out if it would be possible as I have a mortgage so need to make sure I can cover my payments.

Thanks

Not sure about instructors, in particular, but the national minimum wage is now £5.52 for all workers aged 22 and over. Therefore on an average 40 hr week you should be paid (before tax & NI) approx £11500 a year.
Not sure if any help but there you go!

I've worked in a few different horsey jobs and out of about 10, there were only 2 where I was paid the minimum wage. However, if you worked as an instructor for a reputable company, you should get the minimum wage. I wouldn't think you'd get much more though.

Also, don't forget with freelance there are travel costs involved. Good luck...

Im a BHSPT & yes it's minimum wage in RS. Wages get a little bit better if your an AI or over or have any area's of speciality.

I freelance now but i'm even giving that up it just doesnt pay. I have a full time job non horsey & that's the way i plan to keep it at least this way i can pay all my bills without worrying. I am however going to do my stage 4 but thats for myself like all my BHS have been really. I never expected to make a career out of it.

Freelance is hard you really have to market yourself & don't earn a lot for it. The only time it pays is if you don't have to drive to far in between clients & your fully booked but to get to that stage of being fully booked takes ages, & normally clients vary in distance unless your lucky & get a private yard to teach on.

Mmm, thats quite a significant drop from what I am earning now. Will have to get my head down and work out the figures.

I can do a lot of freelance on the livery where I keep my horse, loads of people already ask me how long it will be until I take the instructor test so should be able to get a bit from there.

Perhaps I will ask my instructor. She owns the RS where I take Baron for private lessons, she also teaches me for my Stages.

not much more than minimum wage, and you'll work more hours than you'll be paid for... definately a job you do because you love it, not because your making money...

2 years ago i took on a teaching job, 7-6 6 days a week - £120 plus accomodation... job was ok, livery for my horse was free (working livery though) and the house i lived in was perfectly habitable....

I had a few good years as an instructor, was paid well and looked after well compared to other teaching jobs I have seen, sadly though i had to give it up....

As bad as the money is and as long as the hours are I'd go back to it in a second if i could afford it - even in this weather....

Thats what i was on when teaching at a RS last (although admittedly, its a fair few years ago). 120 a week but i got a reduced livery as opposed to it being free. That was 6 days a week 8-6 set hours and i then had the option of paying to hire the school for one hour extra with the lesson fee being 100% mine (but they charged me 5 pounds to hire the arena for the hour).

you can make a great wage if you are riding at a high level - my dressage instructor is competing PSG and imtermediare, I pay her £35 for a 40min lesson at my own yard, great value as far as I am concerned. However I am only prepared to pay for instruction from someone who can actually ride at a high level. If you are not competing at a high level then you will only be able to command the standard price for a PT or and AI which is about £11k
