Dropped my boy off to the vets last night to have nerve blocks and xrays carried out today to attempt to determine the cause of the intermittent lameness he has suffered over the past while. He is a 17yo 15.3 ISH, and given his foot conformation, and the way the lameness has presented itself, I think the issue will probably be something in his hoof.

If this is the case, I'm not sure I want to go down the remedial shoeing route. Evidently if it is a hoof issue then conventional shoeing isn't working for him either. I am wary of remedial shoeing simply acting as a means to mask the problem, rather than cure it.

Given the symptoms he is presenting I feel it could be heel pain or perhaps something under the umbrella navicular syndrome. Should this be the case, I feel now may be the time to adapt his diet to make it further foot-friendly. He is currently on Hifi lite and http://www.redmills.co.uk/uk/horse/products/product/?id=494&parent=357 - link as I'm not sure if it's available outside of NI - with a joint and hoof supplement. Perhaps a change to a completely plain chaff and inclusion of linseed would make this more hoof friendly, ie a switch from the hifi, but continuing with the hard feed? Or does anyone have any other recommendations?

I won't do anything without the OK from the vet, although I suspect, depending on the outcome, that I may have to have a bit of a 'discussion'.. any pointers?

Of course, it may be something completely different.. but at this stage I want to do what's best for my boy and I feel that his feet are telling me that they are 'sick'.

Apologies for vagueness of this post and the questions, just a lot of thoughts floating around my head at the moment!

My tb presented with intermittent lameness in Jan - hrd to spot - nothing really to see on a straight line but did show on a fairly large circle and he just didn't feel right. He had an mri and they found ddft damage, impar damage, bone bruise plus a few other bits and pieces. He was on field rest for 4 months with a slight improvement but not to the extent they hoped and he is now at Rockley farm going through barefoot rehab. He has been there nearlty four weeks and they are looking to step up his work this week - bit of a difference for a horse that I was told by my vet that chances of coming back to any sort of regular work was slim. I had started him on a better diet (he is a difficult one as he is fairly chilled out character and not always amazing at keeping weight on so has traditionally been fed barley, mixes etc ) so I started him on ers pellets and linseed which seemed to suit him well. Im not totally sure what he is on a Rockley but I think its their own haylage and a fibre feed and judging by the pics I have seen he is doing really well on this. I got masses of support on here which was fab as my vet wasn't amazingly happy neither was my farrier that I chose this road but for me even though its early days the results are speaking for themselves

Would you be able to take some photos of his hooves - it would be interesting to see what concerns you with his hoof conformation.

Have you read this thread? http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/foru...-and-lameness-anyone-had-experience-with-this

Also Oberon has a feed sheet that she will PM to you if you ask. :) Hi fi light is molassed, so it's not ideal. Hi fi molassess free would be better, as long as your horse is Ok with alfalfa. The link to your supplement didn't work for me.

Thanks for the input, both of you! Some interesting ideas so much appreciated. He will be back from vets tonight so I will try and get some pictures. If you're interested in the hard feed he gets it is red mills horse care 10- googling it should bring it up, hopefully! Thanks again!
