A really nice farmer has been supplying me with good hay for the past few years but this year he hadn't even cut any until this week due to the rain and told me he may have problems keeping me going over winter. As such, I 'panic bought' a full load of haylage from another supplier a couple of weeks ago as obviously didn't want to be without good forage.
Now the farmer has called and said he has loads of hay ready to deliver to me

I don't need anymore as we don't have as many horses this year and two of them are out of work anyway.
** GULPS ** How am I going to tell him I don't want it without causing offence or shall I just find the money and buy it anyway ??

If you have somewhere to store it you could buy it anyway?
Orr you could just say you don't need as much because you haven't got as many horses to feed, and you'll let him know when your ready, that way he won't feel like your just sacking him off! lol

As Samgirl said, if you have the storage I would buy it if I were you. Even if you don't need it you could always sell some on later. Or, sell some of the hay you already have perhaps?

If you can afford to buy it I definitely would. You can always sell haylage or hay - especially at the moment. In fact you could always advertise the haylage you have already bought, I am sure it would get snapped up as lots of people are panicking about a possible shortage this winter.

If you dont have the storage or money then be honest with him. Tell him that you bought a load of haylage because he had said he wasnt going to cut and you panicked and you dont need it this year but you would still like some next year. I have saved hay for people who dont turn up and it is bloody annoying tbh as I can usually sell it several times over.

And its even worse if they want to buy off the field and dont turn up to collect. Hence I no longer sell off the field!

If the hay he has is better, buy it and sell on the haylage. It's something that is always going to sell, as awful as it sounds it is a golden opportunity for you to make a little cash and treat your neddies with it

Thanks for your replies everyone, think I'll do the lot - ie tell him the truth and buy a fair size batch off him and tell my friends he has some for sale if they need it.
