Hi, just after some advice on this condition, which is something I have never come across before and how best to ease back into work?
My pony is 20 and I've had her 11years, she has never had this before in that time! But randomly had this happen while I was riding recently. Even the vet was not sure why she got it. She is in very good health/fit apart from this, the Vet even said it might never happen again, but I am so worried about it now!
She had muscle relaxant and bute, blood test showed the enzymes had gone a bit crazy, vet recommended a week off then slowly back into work.
Usually I ride her most days and I do long distance rides, she is quite lively and forward going, I do alot of cantering etc. When she got the tying up, I had just been riding her cantering/jumping in the field for about 20mins then she suddenly got it as I walked her down the road.
She has had her weeks rest and seems fine now, I took her for a walk in hand then rode her for 15min walk (with jogging! as she is not the sort to want to plod about!). Today I hacked her for 40mins or so just walking/ jog trot! She seems fine to me but I don't want to push her and I am really worried it might happen again, as I still don't know why it did the first time?
Anyone who has this condition with their horses, what sort of work/timeframe do you use after an attack to get them back to work?

The one thing Muscles need is Magnesium and this year the grass has been extra short of it.

I have a mare that will tye-up and she is on magnesium now. As your pony is lively and forward going the Magnesium will help this too. Make sure you have warmed up well and calmly cool down.

Another thing you could do and that is to add some salt into the feed. Tying up can be associated with electrolyte imbalance.

You need to make sure that you cool her down properly after exercise. Also a low starch diet is very benefical.
