Hi guys
Just wondering about this as it seems to have been suggested in quite a few posts recently - I had a friend whose horse had this badly once on the way back from a show, and I know it was a fairly major disaster, but can it happen in a much milder form, resulting in just some stiffness etc? WOuld it usually be after hard work etc? No major reason or query, just interested!
Thanks

I've seen it both mild and mojor cases...it usually happens after the horse has been worked or during, typical signs tend to be stiffness in the quarters, hot and sore to the touch, reluctance to continue work, dark urine, patchy sweating...the horses I've known to be affected have mostly been fed on high starchy type diets, kept stabled then suddenly worked...thats perhaps why its also know as monday morning disease too. It's normally suggested the horse to be fed a more fibre based diet, adding oil to the feeds for energy/condition as oppose to concentrate bucket fulls! anyway enough of me going on.....!

My mare suffered with it in her later life and had to have vitamin E and Selenium in her feed and she was fine as long as I maintained the dose. I have no idea why she got it as I was very careful with feed etc.

I have had my mare for 11yrs and she has had a couple of mild attacks...both over 6 years ago - no reoccurrence since. Once was coming in from the field - she hadnt been running around or anything stressful. Brought her in..fine, opened stable door, turned round and she was going stiff. Her veins all came up and were popping through her skin, no sweating, hindlegs went stiff - it came on very quickly. She was uncomfortable and then started showing signs of colic. Vet came out..treated her. She had the first signs of it a couple more times..gave her two bute and within 30mins was totally back to normal...quite strange.
