I am now soooooo fed up of all this passport fiasco that the next time a passport issuing agency sends me another letter I'm going to send them back one filled with manure.
I have just had a call from a lady I sold a horse to a few weeks ago now, that had a full CHAPS passport, CHAPS will not put the horse in to her name without a tranfer of ownership form signed by the owner on the passport, because we sold the horse and were acting agents and are not on the passport, CHAPS will not accept this as a reason why we have no signiture. The lady who previously owned the horse is now in spain and very hard to contact, if possible at all. I completly resent this transfer of ownership business and TBH see it as just another way of the passport issuers squeezing every last penny they can out of you. ESP as If I have a horse come in to sell, I don't know how long I will have it for, it is legal for me to keep it 30 days unregistered, but after that I'm supposed to put my name on it, which I'm afraid I won't do, as most of my horses are in and out quicker than this and even when you send passports off to be changed, they don't ever seem to come back within an acceptable timescale. More rediculous is the fact that most of my imported irsih horses come with nothing AT ALL, and I have to get them passports when they arrive (whihc is fine) but recently I had a lady put a deposit on an irish pony who had just had his passports ent off, and the vet would not even vet it without seeing the passport , even though it had been applied for. So again screwing me over as I now will have to wait 4 weeks for the damn thing to come back before the pony can be vetted plus in effect standing me in 4 weeks of full livery.
It works out more efficiant to get every horse or pony anew passport each time they pass through a large yard, as it actually saves hassle. Its not uncommon for a horse to arrive with up to 3 different passports, all giving diffrent ages, heights and owners. And its virtually impossible to send off and get back the breed society passports from other countries, not just because they are often so badly done with no address or idea how to actually do it!
The whole thing is such a waste of time and right now its really really pissing me off. Sorry for the long winded rant but I'm at the stage of getting all my horse passports togethr and putting them on the bonfire.
Sorry for all the speeling mistakes, I'm angry typing at 90mph!

if it is any help, I agree.....completely....

The whole thing is complete nonsense....can send a horse to the sales with nothing, auctioneers issue a passport on the day....no trace of ownership/breeding/medical info etc - nothing!

I have just sent off a new application for my rescue pony - he has came with nothing (obviously) and address updates for my 2 horses - it has cost me a small fortune for them to stick a sticker on the passport with my new address, which they have no verification of beyond that I sent them a cheque for £10 per passport to do it.....and the new application for the pony has not come back yet - it has been several weeks.....

It is a rip off and a scandal, quite frankly, and does nothing to protect stolen horses, nor has it increased breeding info as breed societies were already handling that adequately....

I'm off for a glass of wine - this has only wound me up!!!!

My (excellent) vets have never asked me for the passports, beyond to sign them for annual vacinations if I wish.....

That's it.....open that bottle of red and we will all feel better shortly!

Me too - its such a bloody hassle. I organised a passport for my mare when I had her on loan in the owners name. Since then I have bought the mare but the owner can't find the passport - so I have to get the vet out again to do the drawings, and spent over £50 for a new one - again!
