B + E Licence

It's a set test like a driving test. Majority of it is the driving part (40mins), which is by far the herdest part of it, esp if you've been driving for a while and picked up bad habits :o. It's assesed to a higher standard than the normal driving test and easy to make mistakes.

The rest of it some theory on how to check you trailer and car is road worthy, showing hitching and unhitching (in the exact correct order!) then a reversing manouver (fairly easy with a bit of practise).

It's NOT an easy test and many people fail the first time so it's well worth going to have some proper lessons.

I am hopefully booking a 5 hour lesson this week and completing the test on Thursday, but I have somewhere I can do some extra work by myself, I can complete some reversing manouvers already using cones etc

Is it really hard and are they quite picky?

That depends on your aptitude with a trailer, observation of the road and ability to remember your driving test rules i.e hands at ten to two and not to cross your hands over and not to drive along resting your hand on the gear stick!

I was pretty adept at towing before I did my test having done it on private land and on grand father rights for quite a while, so I booked a morning session training with a specialist instructor and went straight onto the test, most wanted a minimum of 3 days of training despite my experience, I took a gamble and it paid off, I passed first time with only 2 minors. Good luck.x

As cometitiondiva said, it depends how good a driver you are. Or at least how 'correct' you are. ;)

The towing of the trailer is the easiest part: you forget it's there. It's the 'driving correctly' part that gets most people. There are so so many bad habits you pick up over time that are really hard to undo quickly. I booked myself an extra normal driving lesson (with a normal instructor) for some extra pracitse on driving 'correctly'

The reversing manouver is only one type: a S backwards. It's easy to do with a little parctise. And you only have to do it once. It's the driving test part which most people fail on: you have to drive correctly for 40mins!

If you haven't picked up any bad habits then 5hrs of practise should be enough. If not think about booking in for a normal driving lesson (its cheaper!) with a strict instructor for extra practise.
