If I take my trailer test in my vehicle (automatic) am I only ever allowed to tow with an automatic?
Would it be better to use the instructors car which is a manual but I'm not familiar with?

Yes

If you don't want to be limited to an automatic, then yes.

I had exactly the same issue

Take test in auto = auto licence on UK mainland

Have B manual then auto B+E in NI and get manual B+E !!

You will need to read - DSA B+E TEST AND VEHICLE/TRAILER REQUIREMENTS if thinking of using your own vehicle or trailer

Galaxy, how did you find towing with a manual compared to an automatic?

ROG, I didn't realise NI had different rules. So, annoyingly, if I was in NI it wouldn't matter what I drove for my towing test as I already hold the B manual? but as I'm in England I need to decide if I can psyche myself up enough to use the instructors vehicle.

Thank you both for your replies.
