Our little ginger terrier ran away yesterday at 3pm and has not reappeared.

He is likely to be somewhere stuck down a hole on our farm - does anyone have a fool proof method of locating terriers underground or is this a lost cause?

I am now thinking of attacking various holes with a shovel, but the are a lot of them

Got one terrier man to come out, who used a listening stick rather than dogs.

No joy and this is day 4 of being missing - I am guessing that he is not coming back now.

Don't give up yet! I have personally known dogs reunited after more than two years away but they have been chipped.
Have you any 'travellers' in your area, they're always partial to a tidy terrier?!
Is there any chance he could have come out and gone wandering and been picked up or are you convinced he is still down somewhere? Do you have other dogs to take to the area which might entice him out or at the least, tell you he's down there somewhere? Can you get a posse of you (how about YFC or the Scouts?!) with shovels (for your lot of holes!)
Is he chipped and was he wearing a collar? Have you checked all your water tanks, pits, lagoons; anywhere where he could have got into trouble? Have you rung your local police, dog wardens/homes, vets (not just yours but further afield) your local paper and radio? Have you put up any posters in the area, have you knocked on all the doors in the area; have you tried sites like Dog Lost (they are brilliant from past experience!)?
Sorry for all the questions, just thinking aloud!

Well he is chipped, but not wearing a collar
We have rung the microchip company and registered him as lost. We've rung police, neighbourhood watch and all local dog centres.

He's not a huge fan of strangers so he could have been picked up, but not that likely. He is a 11 year old entire 'ginger' male terrier so don't think he has much value to travellers.

We've put posters up around the village and the hunt met here on saturday so loads of people were looking out for him.

I've tried getting our other dog, a border terrier, to look down holes, but she's not that interested in rabbit holes.
