Decided to leave my two out tonight, in the garden pen that they lived in when they first arrived. Fed them and left them with hay to last until 10pm, when they get more for the night.

Not a chance! By 9.30pm they were pacing around the pen and FB was whinnying his head off, telling us we'd forgotten to put them to bed. Now, it's too dangerous to leave them out if they are not calm as if they go through the electric fence they could get into trouble in the garden.

So cue OH and I rushing round sorting out the stables (FB still calling and circling in the pen). We went out to get them, opened the fence and they were off! They both trotted across the garden, round the end of the house, across the yard, into the barn and into their own stables, where they stood looking very smug indeed. Chucked their bedtime hay at them and retreated to the house muttering dark threats about poofy horses who don't like being outside in the dark...

So, looks like I'm mucking out 365 days a year then

Oh poor you!!! They do things like that don't they?!!

One of mine decided today, that she would rather stay in the stable thanks...they live out 24/7!!!!! If I wanted her to stay in, you could bet your bottom dollar, they'd want out!!! Grrrr!!!!!

I swear that damned horse has a watch hidden somewhere. OH and I said when they arrived here in March we weren't going to get so tied into a routine with them like we were in the south. Ha, ha, ha! No one told FB the plan. Mornings aren't too bad, feed and turnout, but anytime from 7.45pm he's standing at the field gate waiting to come in and if he sees/hears us in the garden he will start calling. Doesn't matter how long the day is, it's broad daylight at 8pm for goodness sake and he STILL knows it's time to come in.

Would it work if you left them out a little bit longer each night?

No, unfortunately, wherever he is hiding his watch, it's very accurate!! I thought that he would get over it with the longer days and that we could maybe leave them out longer and longer but he knows and tells us when it's time to come in!! We can't leave them out in the field because he would panic and start racing about and probably jump out. It's not our land and we get it rent free from a neighbour so we can't put any permanent fencing up. Honestly, I wouldn't mind but he lived outside 24/7 until he came up here, even when they first arrived in March they were outside. He's just a creature of habit. Well, he's going to get a nasty suprise tomorrow 'cos he's going out hacking for the first time in 5 weeks!!

I know the feeling i brought a stallion who was completely wild last year lived out 24/7 unhandled, broke him and kept him mostly stabled last winter now the first sign of rain or a bit of cold and he just stands and shivers, he lives on the yard with a small paddock in front and i have to leave his stable open so he can go in if there is a spot of rain or else you get a horse shivering and feeling sorry for himself the next morning, with the big how could you leave me out look

They knew! Glorious sunshine yesterday, beautiful sunset and a balmy evening. Then it peed it down with rain in the night. They are just like your boy Miss_B, first hint of rain and they turn into 'neglected ponies' . They both looked very pleased with themselves this morning when I took them breakfast,

'See mum, it RAINED! And we were INSIDE!'

At least they are clean and dry to go out this morning

I feel soo much better I thought it was just my two! They start calling to come in at 6 latest and then the gate banging starts its enough to drive you totally mad! We have tried to ignore it but its not relaxing to try and sleep through!
To make matters worse the little loves then want to go out at 7 am and anything after this causes banging on the stable door and squeeling!

Maybe we should rename this post DOES YOUR HORSE HAVE A PET HUMAN? PMSL!
